Unfortunately, Mrs. Jared selected the wrong George Upshaw to claim as her ancestor, when she wrote that book. Her references are actually to George Augustus Upshaw,a son of
Edwin Upshaw (son of John Upshaw and Mary Lafon)and Lucy Roane. This George A. Upshaw was born in Essex County VA in 1802 and died in Erath County TX in 1879.Therefore all her research linking her true George W. Upshaw to the French Huguenots and English aristocracy was in error. She published all of this in her book,"They Met Challenges...".
Mrs. Jared's true ancestor (and mine) was George Washington Upshaw, descended from John Upshaw's brother,Forrest. His son Leroy married Elizabeth Bradley. Their son, Parson Upshaw (1774-1828)was the father of George Washington Upshaw
who was born 1802 in Elbert County GA and died 1875 at Cerro Gordo IL.He married Mary Malinda Greenwood in Jan 1825. She died in 1846 in Peoria IL. I am descended from their son Thomas Jefferson Upshaw (1844-1915).
George W. Upshaw married again, in 1848 in Peoria IL to Elizabeth Denby, and Mrs. Jared was descended from that marriage.
All of this has been fully documented and published in the Upshaw Family Journal.Unfortunately Mrs. Jared's book is therefore of very little value as a historical record.
The Upshaw Family Journals are available on the internet and I urge you to check them out.
