Pat,
Thank you for your follow-up post.I do not have the name of Joe's father, husb of Mary Esther VanCleave.I would also like to have the full maiden names of the wives of Clarence Marion & of Marion Cyrus, if you have them handy, and thank you for your offer to share the info you have on your husbands VanCleave line(s).
It is my desire to share as much of the information that I have gathered over the past 30+ years as possible.I hope that I have properly cited, and given credit to, the work of many of the earlier VanCleave family researchers who have left us with so much history of our family.I do regret that it will not be possible for me to give every source for the date/place of each event posted, and that some of the information posted will, eventually, be proven to be incorrect.I sincerely consider it an honor that you have asked for my permission to add the information posted by me, in genforum, to your family files, and you have my permission to do so.
The only reference that I've found to your Clarence (that I believe is to your Clarence) is the 1900 TX soundex for Vancleave, as follows: Medina Co, TXp4 of Pct 4; Vancleave, Charles(Cyrus?) M 46 12/53 (Wapello Co) IA , Harriet (???) 44 1/56 TX, Lela 15 2/85 TX, Clarence 12 12/87 TX, Barnis L (m) 9 2/91 TX, Albert W 7 10/92 TX & Mary E 3 11/96 TX.(I believe the head of this household was actually your Marion Cyrus, but your follow-up message is the first I had heard of him being named Marion Cyrus.Other than this census soundex listing, I've only found him referred to as Marion, or listed as Marion C.He had several cousins named Cyrus Marion. He probably was named Marion Cyrus, or that he was also namedCyrus Marion, and he used the name Marion Cyrus to distinquish himself from the others).
The name(s) of his father are even more varied. One source of his name being Ahijah is from the VAN CLEAVE (VAN CLEEF) GENEALOGY by Georgia Gosney Wisda, 1956; p90;" F.530. AHIJAH W. VAN CLEAVE (called Hige) born January 5, 1810 in Shelby county, Ky., married August 28, 1833 in Washington county, Ky, Jane Ann Mount (Matthias), born February 7, 1812 (Family Bible gives April 5, 1810) died January 12, 1899 [see 1900 soundex below] at Smiley, Texas at the home of her daughter, America Billings.Ahijah died March 10, 1889 in Texas. He moved with his parents to Montgomery county, Ind. in 1827.He took his family with the Van Cleave clan to Iowa in 1849 to Wapello county where he was in the Census of 1850.He moved to Texas in 1853".

Other than info from this book by Mrs Wisda, all I can find in my personal files on desc's of Ahijah, other than census listings, is a 5-Generation Ancestral Chart prepared by a Mr. Hand, husb of Patsy Dearman. His name was cut off of my copy, but it was probably Glen R Hand.He says: "my parentsIVA EMMA LAXTON ... [&] ALFRED ROY HAND B 28 May 1903 Boerne Tx.M 19 Aug. 1923 Bay City Tx. D 20 Aug. Same Co, Pct 5 p3; Vancleave, Ann J(ane Mount) 88 2/12 KY, listed as mother in household of America A Billings.(Birth date given for "Jane Ann" (Mount) Vancleave, by Mrs Wisda [see above], was prob correct as far as the month of February [instaed of Apr] goes, but there seems to be a descrepency in the year of death, given in same paragraph by Mrs. Wisda.I have no explaination for this, nor do I have any other date of death [year] for "Jane Ann"/"Ann Jane".I do know it was not too unusual to switch the order of first & middle names).
I will now move on to the family ofSamuel Van Cleave & Elizabeth Wood(s), as I have them in my own personal family file (suitcase).Again, the dates/order of birth of their children may follow, or be very similar to, the same information given in the book by Mrs. Georgia Gosney Wisda [cited above] &/or the information given by Mr. Wilson V. Ledley, C.G. in his book, THE VAN CLEEF FAMILY;pub by Polyanthos, Inc; New Orleans, LA, 1976.There are no doubt some variations, also, as I have added to and changed some, over the many years of gathering information about my many Van Cleave relatives. Please let me know if you find any information that seems to be, or is,incorrect.
From VanCleave fam gen forum, #476:
5-3 Samuel b 2/25/1770, md abt 1791 (where?) to Elizabeth Wood(s), d 8/29/1843, Browns Vy, Mont, IN. Samuel md (2) Sarah Garner 12/20/1823 Sh'y Co, KY.
I have Samuel b in Yadkin Valley, Rowan Co, NC, and marriage for Samuel & Elizabeth in Shelby (Sh'y) Co, KY.I also have Elizabeth, dau of Ahijah Wood(s) & Mary Moreson, b 177_ (where?) & d <1820 Shelbyville. Also, Sarah Garner, dau of Wm Garner & (???) 5-3-7 Ruth b abt 1806/7 Sh'yv., md 9/16/1830 Mont'y Co, IN to Hamiliton Gritton, d <1843 Mont'y Co, IN, had a dau Elizabeth J Gritton.

5-3-11 William S b 1817-19 Sh'yv., md (1) Pauline Cole, dau of Thomas Cole & Lucinda Mitchell (sis of Malinda & Pauline Mitchell), (2) Jane (???), no known ch.
Child of Samuel & Sarah Garner:
5-3-12 Samuel Garner b 9/24/1824 Sh'yv., md 1/18/1844 Mont'y Co, IN to Sarah Teeters,d 7/29/1904 (NB?, where he is buried.).
This concludes my own personal family file notes about the six sons & six daughters of Samuel VanCleave, son of Benjamin VanCleave & Ruth Munson. There is much more written about Samuel's descendents, I am sure, but I hope this is a workable outline of the earliest ones.
Thanks in advance for whatever you have to share,
