I would be very interested to know if you would have any information on my VanCleave.George (Washington?) VanCleave born 1870-1780 in Pennsylvania. It is said through family lore he was the son of John VanCleave and Catherine Benham and shortly after his birth his family moved to Dayton, OH where John was murdered by the Indians. Also passed down that after his mother remarried he left home and went (?).Family lore also has him in the Revolutionary War and although there was a George W. VanCleave on the Frigate Macedonia other relatives say it is not him.He doesn't show up in any kind of census record until 1840 in Alabama.Eventually ending up in Marshall Co., AL where he died in 1862 in Marshall Co.He was listed as between the age of 40-50 in the 1840 Census. He married Nancy Evans and she was about 30 years younger than he.Their children were as follows:
John VanCleave b.1828
Prudence VanCleave b.1834
Henry Sonvill VanCleave b.1836
Thomas VanCleave b.1839
William Marion VanCleave b.1942
Margaret Jane VanCleave b.1845
Martha Ann VanCleave b. 1862
All born in Marshall Co., Al.It is also rumored he raised fine horses and sold to the Confederate Army during the Civil War, which is highly unlikely since he died in 1862.Also rumored to have been in New Orleans for a time before going to Alabama and was a cotton merchant there.Could have even had a family before coming to Alabama. All the children list their father as born in PA in all census records and George states it in the census records I've found on him.
If you would have any suggestions or help as to how I might be able to prove any of this it would be very helpful.
Also one of his children, William VanCleave has been verified to have built the first ultralight plane and flew the first plane of any kind over the city of Dallas. He also build airplane motors for the Wright Brothers and all that is verified from the Dallas County Archives by me.
Again, I hope you can give me some advice.I have a lot of information from his children down but a brick wall before him as to his parents other than family lore.
Thanks,
Kay Robertson
