Sorry for this late response to your mail, but browsing through the different threads, I came upon the question how the name 'Van der Veer' should be spelled correctly.
I agree that the spelling of names was quite arbitrary in the old days, but it is not common nowadays to spell it: v.d. Veer. In the netherlands it is common to use v.d. Veer as an abbreviation, but when signing documents for instance, you always use your full name, i.e. van der Veer, where the V of Veer is always capitalized. 'van der' indeed has the meaning of 'of the' or 'from the'.
