Have been tracing Samuel VDV, born in NY died in MI. Have looked into Daniel because of some coincidences.Hope you can provide more definitive info on Daniel and family.
Some of my key points - Daniel and Samuel both came to MI about 1834-37.
Samuel went to Macomb Co. not far from Romulus in Wayne Co. where Daniel first went.
I believe Daniel had been living in Phelps, NY as a Daniel lived there until after the 1830 Census; also there were the Root's and some other names that appear in Wayne/Monroe/Macomb Co's near or with VDV's.
Both found in MI in 1840 + 1850's Census.
Samuel was born about 1802-1806 and thus perhaps too old to be son.Maybe cousin/brother?However, he does not appear as Head of Household in 1830, so I figure he lived with another family, maybe Daniels.
Daniel came to MI a bit older than one might otherwise, if in about 1835, then near age 50. If so, likely came with other family.
Daniel had son, William, that enlisted in Detroit in 1862 in 24th MI Inf.Samuel's son, Orrin, enlisted in the 22nd MI Inf from Chesterfield, Macomb Co in 1862.Ages were about 6 years apart.Orrin's first child named William in 1866.
A Daniel supposedly left Warwick, Orange Co., headed "out west" sometime in 1810-1820 time, or so, just when Phelps was being organized.Other VDV's went there too.Thomas went to MI, later, but returned to NY.
Another Samuel VDV died in 1786, young but married, in Orange CO.Not known if any children. Daniel and Samuel are not common VDV names and earliest are traced to Orange CO., I think.
Ore issue is that Samuel may have left Macomb Co between 1862 - 1867 and moved to Grand Traverse Co, MI.There are other VDV's there but who trace their VDV to Delaware Co. NY.Though the early Delaware VDV's probably are related to the VDV's in Shandaken, Ulster Co, and Woodstock, NY, and Blenheim, Schoharie Co, it is a little bit farther to Warwick in Orange, Co, but it is not impossible. So I am not sure if this means anything or not.Don't know if anyVDV's kept up with any other VDV's in 1770-1820's if not children and living in same county.
