Notes for JACOB STEVEN A DOUGLAS VAN FOSSEN:
Sprit of Progress Shown to be Alive!
Progress and public spiritedness still live. The are not dead. and we can prove what we say.And to our mind it is one of the best examples of its spirit that we have over encountered, one that might well serve as an inspiration to other citizens of this community.
Have you noticed the nice coat of gravel that has been spread on the Jones Street running east from the corner of Wyant Dickinson Heath to the bridge at the foot of the hill?If you haven't noticed it is certainly high time you were casting your eagle eye over it.For it is of that strip of graveled road we would speak and its manor of coming into being.
Steve Van Fossen lives as everyone knows in the big house on that street.the street may have been too dusty, it was certainly dusty enough. However that may be, Steve decided it must not continue.Said he to himself, "I have a team, I have the time.I know where I can get the gravel."Now given a team, the time and the gravel, what was to prevent him from putting the three together, and evolving a nicely graveled stretch of road past his house?"Nothing." said Steve. So he hooked the old team up to the wagon and hauled enough gravel to give the road a thorough coat from the corner tothe bridge. The labor of graveling the stretch did not cost the city a thin dime.
That is the kind of civic pride and usefulness that we believe in.It is certainly the thing that makes towns beautiful and streets useful.Steve Van Fossen deserves a vote of thanks, publicly from every citizen of Shellsburg. His action should make the rest of us a feel a blush of guilty shame mantling our noble brows when we think of the little things that we neglect and the big thing he has accomplished. They used to say " go to the ant and learn wisdom."We may well paraphrase that and say in Shellsburg."Go to Steve Van Fossen and learn how to improve our town."This was in the papers. Steve and Ann live in the home they boughtfrom Dr. Mc Corkil.

Notes for ERMA LORENA VAN FOSSEN:
Erma was short and olive complection.
A hard workerLoved to work outside loved to
sew and make quilts and things.
Lived on a farm her married life. Raised chickens,
loved to have her hair combed she would fall a sleep
when I Sheryl Mason Kurth would come over as a little girl.
Moved to town latter in life and joined groups and a quilting club
that donated quilts to the needy.Joined the Senior Cittizen Club.
Daughter of Jacob Steven A Douglas was born on a farm in the
Lewis Bottom area and the family moved to Shellsburg
when Erma was around three years old.Erma was
the youngest of three children: Joseph LeRoy (born August 4 1888)
and died (Sept 4 1916) when a cistern caved in on him.
Iona Delda (born March 19,1893) and died (June 11 1916
of complications followinghead operation.
Erma was born (November 3 1906).Both her brother and
sister were very young when they passed away although each
were married and had a child at the time of their deaths.
Erma tells that she was quite spoiled as a youngster
having a very nice doll collection and when entering one
of the local stores in Shellsburg was given anything in the
line of candy that she wanted. This wasgiven to her by the store owner.
The one thing that Erma tells most about as the type of
dress that she was allowed to wear.As a young lady,
one particular time she wanted to wear a dress tha
t had no sleeves in and her father made her go upstairs
and change before she could leave the house to go on her date.
Another thing that Erma told about was that when she went
out on a date her mother would always be waiting at the foot
of the stairs for her when she arrived home.
Erma was born in the country east of Shellsburg but later her
father bought a home in town where she spent the majority if her youth.
Some of the farm land where the Van Fossen s lived is now under
water wherethe Pleasant Creek Lake is.
The home in Shellsburg was a very large house and was used
as a boarding for a time. There were many peoplethat stayed
there but the one group that Erma recalls best is the Ingraham Show Troup
stayed there for many years. This same home
was later bought by one of Everett and Erma's daughter's Decie.
It was remodeled and the upstairs was made into apartments.
The lower level became Clyde and Decie Masons' home.
.The dinning room floor in this house was laidby hand, by a
Frenchman who stayed at the home for room and board.
There are only three other homes in town laid by the same person.
The name of the flooring was Parquet.
I Granddaughter SherylMason Kurth,remembe

I remember seeing grandma work hard in the gardens and

Notes for EVERETT LEE CRESS:
Everett Lee Cress, the oldest son of John Ameriah and Minerva Mae ( Andrews)
Cress, was born Feb 26, 1903 on a forty acre farm seven miles south of Center Point and two miles north of Toddville, on the Monroe and Washington Township line in Linn County Iowa. There were four children in his family, a younger sister Bertha Fern (born February28, 1907) and two younger brothers, Forrest Earl ( born February 16, 1909) and Lloyd Allen ( born Aug 22 1913).
Everett went to school in a country school where one teacher taught children between the ages of five and twenty-one.The school houses were heated by wood stoves and it was the responsibility of the teacher to get the fire burning in the morning before the students came for the days classes, although the children had to bring the wood inside the day before.Generally there were only twotown pupil’s in a grade and all the grades were located in one room.
The seventh grade always seemed to be the largest of the grades and the subjects taught were not as many as there are today. The three basic R's (Readin'. Ritin' and Rithmatic') were strongly emphasized along with history, geography, physics, and grammar (modern English). The teacher had the treat of preparing the assignments and not getting them out of a packet system or computer like they do now.
The children did not need thirteen years schooling to receive their diploma. In fact very few students ever graduated and fewer ever advanced to college in the rural farm area. This was mainly because when they were old enough the children had to quite school to help at home with farm work or would have to get a job to help with some of the financing. The girls many times quit to either help at home or to marry and start housekeeping for their own family. After completing the eight grade the girls could take one year of college (located in Cedar Falls, Iowa) and this entitled them the right to teach school.
Days were started at 9'Oclock in the morning and continued until 4 O'clock in the afternoon. The noon meal was always carried in a tin lunch box bucket, sack or sometimes in a shoe box, as there was no hot lunch program. This meal usually consisted of a sandwich, fruit, cookies or cake and once in a while a boiled egg was taken. The children had recesses then as well as the younger children do now although all grades could partake of this activity.Morning recesses were from 10:15 to 10:30 and afternoon recess, from 2:15 to 2:30.
Everett went to school at Haegarmen #9 School and tells of the time when the children persuaded the teacher to exchange their recess time for a longer lunch period. This time was used by some of the boys to hustle down to a near by stream and go skinny dipping in the water. This worked out real well until one of the boys almost drowned.Everett recalls saving the boys life by giving him artificial resperation. After that happened the teacher found out what the boys had been up to and there were no more recess exchanges for longer lunch hours.
There were no school busses to pick up the children and carry them to school in the morning and again return them home at night.Everett and his sister and brothers had to walk, one and one-fourth miles by road or one mile if you cut through fields, every day and morning, and evening. If they were lucky their father would take them to school by horse and wagon when the weather was bad.
The school year was much different then, starting in August, running for three, three month periods. They were: August September and Oct: December, January and February: and then again April, May and June. The months of November, March and July were always off months having no school. It took Everett three years to complete his eight grade because he had to help work during the summer months and could only go to school during the months when the weather was bad enough so he couldn't work outside.
He was thirteen years old when he got his first job working as a farm hand for his mothers brother, Uncle Willie Andrews,in the Lewis Bottom area betweenPalo and Center Point. He received the sum of $1.00 per day as his wage.He usually stayed at the uncle's home but when transportation was needed his horse "June" provided it for him.He worked as a general farm hand doing jobs from mowing hay to milking cow.
Everett lived near the Center Point area until he met and married Erma Van Fossen, daughter of Jacob Steven A. Douglas and Anna Agenes Elizabeth ( Hopper) Van Fossen.
Everett and Erma met inthe Shellsburg Community Hall at a party that was being held there.Upon the request of Elaine Boddicker, Everett told on tape about their wedding day.
" The year was 1927 on February the eleventh. The weather was considerable different then than it is now.The roads were so rough that we couldn't get on the highways with cars or hardly with horse and buggy.Thison the eleventh of February in Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Two is our Fifty Fifth Wedding anniversary.I walked from Lewis Bottom which is five miles east of Shellsburg up to Shellsburg, picked up my intended wife and we walked from her place down to the depot, and got on the train. We rode to Cedar Rapids, went to the court House and got our license. We didn’thave to have a waiting period at the time.We got our marriage license and got on the train again, went up to Toddville, had the same minister marry me and my wife that married my father and his wife and also my one brother (Forrest) and his wife.I think maybe that's kind of a record. But today, February the fifth, nineteen hundred and eighty two, it's cold.I'll tell you what "it's a whole lot different today than it was in the year nineteen hundred and twenty seven."Well after we got married there in Toddville, we had no way of going, only a foot so we walked back down to the railroad track and almost seven miles up the railroad track to where my folks was living. We stayed there for a few days and came back over and I started working for Willie Andrews again. We worked the rest of that year up until March 1, 1928, them moved back to Center Point. We lived over there a year and moved back to this side of the river in 1929.We been stuck over here ever since. That’s about all the history of back in them days when we either went a foot or we just didn’t go atoll.this is the oldman Everett Cress and after fifty five years of marriage life I'm still going pretty strong.
They moved in 1929 to Shellsburg and purchased an eighty acre farm in the 40's from Dan King. This farm was located one mile West and one fourth mile north of Shellsburg,Canton Township, Range 9.It was one of the oldest places between Vinton and Shellsburg in Benton County.Ralph and Marie Spencer had lived on the farm before Everett's purchased it.A very unfortunate thing happened to Everett and Erma in the transaction of the farm.
A small amount of Erma's money was borrowed from Erma'a parents and used to purchase this land. Therefore Anna's name was put in the courthouse records. After Grandma'sVan' death the farm sold and when final payment was made on the farm by the buyer the deed and abstract had to be brought up to date.In 1978 the courts made Everett and Erma pay inheritance taxes on the land that they already owned.
They lived on this farm until 1973 but in the 60's they purchased the small house in Shellsburg of Grandma Van Fossen's.After they purchased this house one of Everrett's brothers' Lloyd Cress lived there until Everett and Erma's childrenmoved them intotown. At the time this was done Everett was not very happy about it buthe soon adjusted to town living and enjoying life to the best of his ability.
All of their nine children except the oldest two were born on the farm and all attended the Shellsburg, School.Even many of the grandchildren attended school and graduated from Shellsburg. Most of the children and grand children settled down within a 50 mile radius of Shellsburg, Iowa.
While Everett and Erma were young and raising their family they were not able to do much traveling but found their enjoyment in going to barn dances and visiting friends.Everett played a guitar and a fiddle in a small band one time and was pretty good at calling square dances. Many Saturday nights were spent with friends gathering together somewhere for a dance. The children can remember all the coats that were piled on the tables that were not full of refreshments. When one of the children got tired all he had to do was to pile on top of the coats and hope he didn't get lost in the shuffle.
After the children started marrying and settling down some of the daughters and sons-in-laws would take them ona trip with them. Some of the states they have traveled in with Fern and Ralph , Decie and Clyde, Doris and George and Alberta and Earl are: Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Northern Missouri and Nebraska.
There were two different ways of farming that Everett used during his years of farming.Starting witha horse and wagon and progressing on to the tractor. This tractor was a John Deer G.P. 1927 model taken approximately in 1936 or 37..His horsedied of sleeping sickness.
Grandpawas an electrician for many years, and he enjoyed fishing and parties, dancing, telling stories and laughing.
He was president of the Senior Citizen Club several times and Grandma was always in charge of picking up the bingo prizes.Grandma always gardened large huge gardenand loved to make quilts embroidering and crocheting .
There was an article about Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Cress and a daughter, Doris, 15 suffered minor injuries last night about 7:30 when the 1933 Chevrolet driven by Cress, collided head-on with a 1929 model a Ford, driven by William Sutton of Palo. The accident occurred at an intersection one and three-quarter miles southeast of here.
Cress suffered a minor head cut, his wife, leg cuts and bruises and Doris suffered a sprained neck. they were treated by Dr. C.L. Bradley at Newhall and sent home. The Cresses" other four children, riding with them when the accident occurred, were uninjured.
Cress, traveling north, had allegedly stopped at the intersection and turned west as Sutton reportedly approached on the wrong side of the road. Both vehicles were damaged beyond repair.Sutton, riding alone, was unhurt.
I remember grandpa eating pancakes everyday with butter and sugar on them or milk and sugar.Mom remembers being stood on a stool to the stove making pancakes for the whole family everyday.

Kelisa Cress Day will honor 13 year old Hiawatha amputee
from the Cedar Rapids Gazette
For Kelisa Cress, having her right leg amputated six inches below her knee wasn't all bad.it meant having five fewer toe nails to trim.
Kelisa, 13 daughter of Mary and Roy Cress of Hiawatha, lost part of her right leg to cancer .The operation was necessary to remove a tumor in her foot. However, iftelephone interview is any indication, she has retained a sunny disposition and her lovefor athletics.
To honor Kelisa, the Hiawatha City council has designated Sunday as Kelisa Cress Day.A benefit softball game is being sponsored by the Hiawatha Kids League to raise money for her..
Sunday's game, at 2 p.m. in Hiawatha city Park, will feature the Hiawatha League coaches, umpires and parents against the KCRG Radio softball team.In addition to the donations, all proceeds from the concession stand will be given to Kelisa.
It means a lot to Kelisa to have the Kid's League honor her.She has been playing softball for the league since she was 8.she considered herself a "pretty good pitcher."
Softball is a family game in the Cress family. After she had her leg amputated and was in a cast, she would still play catch with members of her family. She was determined to stay active in sports.
On March 8 it was discovered Kelisa had cancer. She had found a bump on her foot, and it hurt when she touched it.The doctors did exploratory surgery and removed tissue from her foot. The tissue tested malignant.
'When Kelisa's mom told her she had cancer and would have to have part of her leg amputated, Kelisa thought she was kidding. She recalls that she then became scared but did get over that feeling.
"At first it bothered me a little, but then it didn't because I had my knee and I could do everything I used to do and since people didn't act differently, it didn't bother me."
June 20 1982 partial parts form an article in the Gazette.
Kelissa Christian Cress, 16, of 1108 Bowler St., Hiawatha, died of cancer Tuesday at Mercy Hospital.
Born June 24, 1968, in Cedar Rapids, she was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Surving are her father, Roy E. of Hiawatha; her mother, Mary K. of Hiawatha; two sisters, Kimberly Kay of Marion and Kenda Marie at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harve J. Christian of Marion and Mr. and Mrs. Everett L. Cress of Shellsburg.

Carl Ries.Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 603 10th St. SE, Cedar Rapids Memorial; or to the charity of the donor's choice. The casket will be closed at the church..

Honored- The Newhall "Reject" Band received the governor's volunteer Award April 15 at the 6 th annual award Day Celebration, at the North Iowa Technical Institute, Dubuque, for their time, commitment and service given unselfishly to agencies and organizations throughout the area.
Members of the band are Elaine Boddicker, Kathryn Gewecke, Helen Boddicker, Virginia Kerkman. Velma Deklotz, Lillian McNulty, Faye Nolan, Viola Werning, Marcia Wichman, Karen Gessner, Helen Hartz, Marilyn Reider and Pam Claassen. Vinton IowaPaper June 16, 1988This group has traveled 1,140 miles and played 1,800 hours. They have performed for all sorts of events. The Rejects do not take you everyday instruments to a performance. Besides the piano, members use three or four accordions and a violin with rhythm section being made up of a cut off high chair with a wood block, bongos, cymbals and foot with bells, plastic cups and spoons attached; a bass drum made from a garbage can with stool brushes for sticks; a bazooka with an attached funnel and guitar from a toilet seat and a washboard and jugs. There customers are bib overalls, a burlap dress inspired by Native American costumes, their husbands' pants, suspenders and hats of all sizes- Elaine likes to blacken her front teeth, a fashion statement audiences quickly notice since Elaine grins a lot as she performs. Most of the women wear red T-Shirts with the band's name on them."It really depends on the mood that they're in and where they play.
they were asked once it there a rehearsed before they play, the women all laugh."We rehearse when we play," says Marilyn."We've gotten worse when we rehearse,"adds Elaine."Were not perfect. We don't have to be." Says Karen. "We all love it," says Lillian.Sounds like a GREAT TIME DOSEN'T IT>>>KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

Hi,
Yes, I did get your e-mail but have not taken time to check it out yet. Is this something that I can go into more than once or is it just a one time thing.I think this will take more than just a few minutes to investigate it out but I certainly want to do it.
Things are just now getting to where I can get back into working on the geneology again and picture albums. We only have to sell the house and Dave the the kids are going to do that.I won't have anything to do with that at the present time anyway.
It sure has been a long time to get things back together again almost good to get a life back.
Going to your mom and dads tomorrow night to go through pictures with Marilyn and Fern that they had gotten from Aunt Bertha.Wouldn't it be nice to do that kind of running around.Someday!!!!!!!!!
Take care.See ya!Elaine

Dixie Kjeldjaard came with us and helped take care of you on the train. Your daddy met us at Grand Central Station and you took your first ride in a taxi to the bus station and rode on the bus to Spring Valley, New York where we lived.
That was in 1943 and in 1944 We left Suffern New York on Feb. 5, 1944 to come home. Daddy had a fifteen day furlough and came home with us.You were ten months old then and enjoyed the trip home and the people in the train. Daddy went back to New York on Feb. 21st. at 9:25 P.M..
In 1944 we bent back to New York in April and this time lived in Nyack. Stayed out there until October.

Another thought on this beautiful am. About -14 C, overcast with
hoarfrost covering everything. Will be very beautiful once it clears and
the sun comes out. A good morning to sit at the computer and think
before the house comes alive with my two busy little girls and wife.
Janice and I had a small laugh last night as we looked over your photos
as I had missed the picture of Denny at the Red Green Show. We laughed
because I have a distant cousin on another side of the family that was a
regular participant at the taping of Red Green. He is retired and part
time acts in these types of shows to amuse himself. We laughed because
we always said that two worlds were likely to collide at some point with
all this family research. Also, where in Ont is the Arrowhead Resort.
Couldn't pinpoint. Talk to you again. Darryl.....

Glad you liked that story. I can't pinpoint Nestor Falls on my map (its not very
good in that area) but I know the general area. I used to work for the Royal Bank
and one of my bosses has a cabin on Lake of the Woods. Another counterpart moved
to Dryden to work. Also, a cousin of ours, Jason Reynolds, son of my uncle Dale,
went to university in Thunder Bay for I beleive, 4 years. My sister (Lisa) and
brother in law travel thru every summer to Sault St. Marie where his family have
a cabin on Lake Superior. Thats the only connections I can make to that area.
Thanks again. Darryl....
