Looking for the ancestors of Marshal Vanhook, Benjamin Vanhook and others descendants of Mathew Barnes and Lettice Richardson in the Somerset and Buck Creek areas of Pulaski County. Mathew served in the War of 1812 and walked home from New Orleans after the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Mathew and Lettice are reputed to have had 12 children of which, one of thedaughters married a Vanhook. Another married John Farmer, Elizabeth married Washington Mounce , and still another I believe married a Ping. This basic information and more came from Benjamin Vanhook who lived at the foot of the hill on South Main Street in Somerset just before you get to the Southern RR Depot. Elizabeth Barnes Mounce had twin boys William Amos Mounce and ____? and a daughter. About 1863 she had Andrew Marion Mounce. Washington Mounce dissappeared without a trace about or before the Civil War. Associated with this family was that of Alexander Hulin Farmer and his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Guthery. About 1990 Ben Vanhook took my Uncle Andy Mounce of Somerset and myself to the original cabin site of Mathew Barnes out on Buck Creek in eastern Pulaski County. I have collected a lot of research on these families but there remain significant holes in the data.
