"Vannatter" is usually a variant of Van Etten. Jacob Jansen Van Etten, the Dutch immigrant, came from the village of Etten, North Brabant, Holland. The early settlement of Kingston, NY, had three men named "Jacob," so he was referred to as "Jacob from Etten." Many of the descendants of his son Emmanuel, who migrated to New Jersey, used the name "Vanatta" or variants thereof. See the published Van Etten genealogies for further information.
