Lucretia (Lucy) M. (VanOrsdol) Swatman b: September 6, 1857 Columbus City IA d: October 5, 1885 College Spring Jerauld Co. Iowa.
Lucy (VanOrsdol) Swatman died five months later after she gave birth to Josephine Eunice (Swatman) Barnhill.
After the death of Milton's first wife, Lucy (VanOrsdol) October 5, 1885, Milton's mother Lydia (Gibbs) Swatman, lived with him some. Milton and Lucy's baby, Josephine stayed with Milton's sister Alice (Swatman) Cross and her husband Newton Cross's home and some at Milton's brother Benjamin and his wife Josephine Elizabeth (Weatherhead) Swatman also took care of her in their home in Templeton, west of Wessington Springs. When Milton's brother William and his wife Rebecca (VanOrsdol) Swatman and their children moved to Henry county Iowa in 1886, they took baby Josephine with them. Rebecca (VanOrsdol) Swatman was Lucy's sister.They took Little Josephine to Lucy and Rebecca's parents, James and Experience (Parke) VanOrsdol home to live. The Grandparents and the uncles and Aunts took care of Josephine until she was 18 years old. Josephine remained with her grandparents home until 1903 when she came to Idaho. This is where her father Milton Swatman, lived and her step mother Nina Jame (Smith) and 10 step-brothers and sisters.She was with her family some Josephine worked and sent to school in Garfield Washington. She also build a house there with the money she inherited from her mother's people.
