The community was startled Friday when the news spread that J B VanSickle had died that morning after a long siege of pneumonia. Mr VanSickle had been sick for some time but had rallied and was thought to be out of danger. A weakness in his unaffected lung caused by an accident a year ago developed the disease in that lobe after it had been conquered in the other and in his weakend condition he was unable to withstand the second attack. The end came early Friday morning. Dr. Fouts and Miss Nellie Joyce were in attendance throughout his illness and the family are very grateful for their care and services.
The funeral services were held at the home west of town Sunday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by Dr D K Tindall and Rev J P Webster.
John Burr VanSickle was born 6 Mar 1860 in Richwood, Union, OH, and was 52 yrs, 2 months and 4 days old at the time of his death. When 8 yrs of age his family moved to Indiana where they lived until 1871. In that year they came to Merrick Co and Mr VanSickle has made his home here since that time. In 1881 he was married to Miss Olive Hudnall, also from OH. To this union were born 9 children; 6 girls and 3 boys, all of whom are living. Mr. VanSickle united with the Methodist church in Central City in 1906. Two years later he transferred his membership to the Methodist Church at Chapman.
To know Mr VanSickle was to admire and respect him. Serupulously honest in his business dealings, fair and unselfish in this associations with his neighbors, loyal and devoted to his family. He was a good citizen and a good man. (More in Central City News, 16 May 1912)
