I found this in a county history."History of Macon Co, Mo:Lewis Vansickle, from Canada, came to Indiana, a blacksmith by trade, married Brookie McKee, daughter of Captain John McKee of Terre Haute or South Bend, Indiana.Histories of Macon and Randolph Counties 1884, show he served in the war of 1812, fourth regiment of Ky. Infantry. After his military service, he and family came to Macon Co, in 1839 and settled on a farm 7 1/2 miles south of Macon, known as the Enoch Huntsman place. This was one of the first tracks of government land in Macon Co.they had 10 children.Lewis Vansickle died in Kansas in 1872.
His pension papers said that he married Brookie in Vigo County, Indiana.Terre Haute is the county seat of Vigo Co.Brookie said that he lived briefly in Canada after the War of 1812, but that he was from New York.
Lewis died April 4, 1876, in Junction City, Kansas.
Lewis and Brookie were married January 16, 1822, in Vigo County, Indiana. Many of their kids said that they were born in Elkhart Co, Indiana.
The Macon Co History said that William Vansickle, son of Lewis, married Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of John Ellis, in 1845.They lived in Missouri when the war started.William's rheumatism was severe, he and his family moved to Denton Co, Tx, for health reasons. At this time they had 5 children, Maryanne, Henry, Clara, Drucilla and John.Laura was born in Texas. There was a drought and crops dried up.They hauled water six miles. He made wagons but had to trade them for other commodities as no one had money. The civil war started and the soldiers took the wagons and horses as needed.Great grandfather was chopping wood on his knees, due to back and legs problems. They (the soldiers) took him with them without telling his wife and chldren goodbye, made him drive an ammunition wagon in state of Louisiana. He wrote and told his wife if he never saw her again, he would meet her in heaven. He was shot during the war and died in Louisiana and never knew baby Laura walked.Great grandmother said they had to card and spin cotton for clothes."
