Please note my message #324 in this Forum regarding Gene Van Sickle's work.
In Gene's "Van Sickle Heritage Publications Add-On #4", pages 32 and 33, he published a letter from me to him, dated 5 November 1988, in response to earlier correspondence, which discusses Clinton DeWitt Van Siclen and some of the extended family. Mary's (and my) line is that of the New Lots Van Siclens.
It is important to note that this line of the family is not Ferdinandus^1, Reinier^2, Ferdinandus Reinierse^3, Reinier^4, Abraham^5. This faulty descendancy was first propagated by Teunis G. Bergen and repeated by John W. Van Sickle. In our more immediate family, Mary, the late Sarah Eldert Rapalje simply copied over that mistake.
The father of Abraham^5 Van Siclen of New Lots, Kings County, Long Island, was Johannes^4 (Ferdinandus^3 Reinierse, Reinier^2, Ferdinandus^1) Van Siclen, who married Gertrude Lott. Johannes was a school teacher in New Lots. It remains unclear whether his son Abraham was born in Flatlands or New Lots.
In this same vein, it is important to note that the Van Siclens in Oyster Bay did not arrive in that township by way of New Lots. Instead, this is the line of Minne^3 (Ferdinandus^2, Ferdinandus^1) Van Sicklen. Minne^3 was born in Gravesend, Kings County, married in Jamaica, Queens County, and took up residence in Oyster Bay independent of, and in advance of, the Johannes^4 Van Siclen-Gertrude Lott family migrating to New Lots.
