Civil Marriage Registration #1887-009612: "German VARTY, age 24, residence Tp Belmont, born Tp Murray, bachelor, farmer, Methodist, son of Isaac VARTY and Maria GERMAN, married on 16th March 1887 in Norwood to Sabra GLYNN, age 21, residence Tp Belmont, born Port Perry, spinster, Methodist, daughter of John GLYNN and Sarah GLYNN. By Rev. Jas. ANDERSON by license.Witnessed by Sm..? GERMAN of Murray and Emma BRUNSCOMBE of Murray."Sabra's marriage is also recorded in her parent's Bible where she shows as "Sabra Ann M. GLYNN" probably for "Sabra Ann Margaret GLYNN".Rev. Mr. ANDERSON was the Methodist Minister in Norwood.
From Havelock Standard 17th June 1926: "The death occurred on Friday last of Christopher German VARTY of Belmont, in his 62nd year.The deceased who had been ill for the past six months, leaves besides his wife, two sons, George of Belmont and John of Rochester, and two daughters, Mrs. Wellington ELLIS of Belmont and Gladys at home.Messrs. George and Louis VARTY of Belmont are brothers of the deceased.The late Mr. VARTY, who was most highly respected, had _??__, which was largely attended, took place on Monday afternoon to the Maple Grove Cemetery, services being conducted at the house by Rev. E. O. SEYMOUR."
Peterborough Examiner 1951."Five Generations Attend VARTY Reunion.Havelock.Five generations of the family of Mrs. German VARTY, of Belmont Township, were present at a family reunion on Sunday in her home. ... Mrs. VARTY, 85, was born in Burne?lia and was formerly Sabra GLENN, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John GLENN.Her father carried on a shoe repair business in the early days of Havelock's history.In 1887, she married German VARTY who died in 1923 [sic].She has 2 sons, George who lives with her and John of Rochester NY, and one daugther, Mrs. Wellington ELLIS of Belmont Township, all of whom were present. ... eleven grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren ...".
From Havelock Standard 3rd April 1958: "Mrs. VARTY Observes 92nd Birthday at Party.... has been a resident of Belmont for 71 years and has spent all those years on the same farm to which shecame as a bride in 1887. ... the presence of five generations of her family, namely, her daughter, Mrs. Welt [sic] ELLIS of Belmont, her son, German ELLIS of Havelock, his daughter (Glenna), Mrs. Kenneth JOHNSON of Havelock and her son, Kenneth Glenn.... Mrs. VARTY has one sister, Mrs. W. FIFE of Detroit who is 97, one daughter Mrs. W. ELLIS of Belmont and two sons, George at home and Jack of Rochester.The latter, with his wife and daughter, were also present for the birthday party."
From Havelock Standard 31st March 1960: "Mrs. Sabra VARTY 94 Years Old.... formerly Sabra GLYN, was born near Gananoque [sic] and while a young girl moved with her parents to Orono where she received her education.Her father, John GLYN, was a shoemaker by trade and operated a shop in Havelock in the vicinity of the creamery for many years. ..."
Peterborough Examiner 1961"Mrs. German VARTY.Havelock.Mrs. German VARTY, 95, oldest resident of Belmont Township, died on Saturday after a brief illness.Mrs. VARTY celebrated her 95th birthday only a month ago.Her husband, German VARTY, died in 1923 [sic].She has lived on the same farm her entire married life.The former Sabra GLYN was born at Gananoque [sic], daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John GLYN, and moved when a small child with her parents to Orono, where she received her education.Mrs. VARTY is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wellington ELLIS (Maude), and two sons, George with whom she lived, and John of Rochester, N.Y., 11 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the B.A. CURTIS funeral home.The Rev. John KING will officiate.Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery."
