Joshua Vassar was my great-great-great grandfather, he was born in Isle of Wright, Virginia 1840, was 98 years old at his death 1938. He told me, as a younger, his family walked from his birthplace to Hancock county Georgia. Joshua was the son of his black mother's master. He moved his wife and children to Irwin county Georgia in 1890's. I knew all of his children except Will and Joseph. Will died before my time, however, I knew Will's children. To my knowledge, Joseph had no offsprings.
My reason for this e-mail is to find the conection between the Virginia clan and the Hancock countians. Learning that the Vassar was highly interseted in eduction; this along the alleged fact, Joshua's started an school in the area for the sons ofthe plantations owners. I was only 6 yrs., at his death.
