Vaux, Vaulx, Vaus, Vause, and Vass are just a few of the variants of the same name you will find in the records of such counties as York, Gloucester, Lancaster, Middlesex, old Rappahannock, Essex and others. It appears there were 5 brothers that came to eastern VA in the 1630s-1640s: Robert, Humphrey, Thomas, John, and James. You will find their names written in many of the variants above. John usually appears as Vaus or Vause, though I have seen his name also written Vaux in one place. These men were likely sons of James Vaux who died in Wiltshire, England. They were of the Cumberland England line of Vaulx of Catterlyn.
Other variants of the name include de Vallibus, Vale, Valx, Vaulx, Vaulse, Vaulce, Vauce, Vauss, Wauss, Waus. Research indicates that the name comes from the Norman-French VAL or VALE (Valley), and its plural VALS or VAU(L)X from the Latin Vallis.
See my posts on other forums such as Vass, Vause, and Vaux for more information on this line.
