To follow up on your post . . . it appears relatively certain that your S.L. Vermillion is Samuel L. Vermillion (b. 1856) the son of Charles (b. 1812 in VA.) and Ann Vermillion (b. 1812 in NJ). Samuel was the last of 8 children born to this couple. The first six children (Richard, William, Eliza, Tabitha, Asbarina and George) were born in Union (Hancock County), Ohio while the last two (Sarah and Samuel) were born in Iowa.I also learned that Christopher and Elizabeth Borders were living in Jasper County, MO in 1870, if that is of any help to you. The information about the Ohio period came from the 1850 census. The information about Samuel and his family came from the 1870 Iowa census.I do not know who Charles's parents might have been, but based on migration by Vermillions from Virginia to Ohio I would speculate he could possibly have been the fourth of nine children born to Garrison Vermillion and Jane Vanander.Garrison's family moved from Virginia to Ohio sometime after 1813 and eventually settled in Licking County, Ohio.
