I am trying to trace living relatives of this airman, killed in WW2 when his Wellington Bomber was shot down over France:
Name: READ, PETER VERRALL Initials: P V Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Unit Text: 150 Sqdn. Age: 20 Date of Death: 08/05/1941 Service No: 1152158 Additional information: Son of Charles and Alice Mary Read, of Shirley, Southampton. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Plot L. Row A. Coll. grave 20-22. Cemetery: NANTES (PONT-DU-CENS) COMMUNAL CEMETERY
While his parents are listed as living inSouthampton, I believe that his parents married in Dorking, Surrey and were originally from that area.
Charles Read married Alice M.A Verrall,in Dorking, Dec 1913
Peter V. Read , registered September 1920, mothers maiden name Verrall
There does not appear to be any siblings for Peter and Alice Mary A Read died in Southampton in 1974. her husband Charles Read died the same year.
I think that Alice Mary Verrall was the daughter of George Thomas Verrall (c. 1863 - 1899)and Alice Young(c. 1868 and remarried Arthur Chapman in 1901, died in 1960 age 91 at Surrey Mid Eastern)
George and Alice had 4 daughter. Alice who married Charles read and :
- Ellen May Verrall born 1893 , died 1961Surrey SW, married 1916 at Dorkingto Thomas Goodridge, daughter Joyce born 1917. I have some letters from Joyce to the town in France fronjust after the war , enquiring about her Cousins Grave. Joycemarried Oliver Nash in 1969 in Watford. they had no children and she diedin 1997
- Frances Selina verrall born 1897, died Dorking 1926 unmarried
- Dorothy Kate Verral, born 1899, died 1981 at Surrey SE, married 1920 at Dorking to Edward Larkin, born 1896, died 1970 at Surrey SE. Daughter Frances M. Larkin born 1927 at Reigate but nothing more could be found about her.
