Hi Michael, I do not have anything before Jacques and that surprises me.It is my understanding that the French law (like the law in New France) required that the couple record the name of their parents. That is most likely why we have the parent for his wife Marie Boisdon.Even if we had his parents, I doubt that we could go any further.
The French, as well as most of Europe’s records were destroyed by their civil wars, WWI and WW2.The only reason that the Quebec pioneers have good records is because Québec had very few battles and the law required that they used their father’s original surname (no dit or aka names) for all marriage contracts and census. The law also required that the marriage contract be recorded by a notary and that he recorded all four of the couple’s parents. That is the only reason that we have one generation in France. Even with this law and individual could have given the wrong information if they did not want to be traced.
The only records that were well kept in Europe, was that of royalty and the elite. These records were kept by monks in caves.
Janet
