World War II heron, M. SGT. LEONEL G. VIDAURRI, 85 passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2001 at his home in Houston where he resided since 1959. He dedicated his life to family, God and country. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving 23 years and was a veteran of WWII and The Koren Conflict. On October 18, 1944 he single handedly captured 27 German solders. He himself was later captured and held as a POW for 18 months. His commendations include a Bronze Star and three Purple Heart Medals. Leonel was preceded in death by his loving wife, Annie M. Vidaurri, his parents, Felix and Juanita Vidaurri, sisters Elida V. Hernandez, Hilda V. Rodriguez and Sonia V. Medrano, and brothers, Raul Vidaurri and Efrain G. Vidaurri. Surviving family members include his daughter, Lily Lester; sons, Efrain (Judy) Vidaurri and Leonel "Elmo" (Helen) Vidaurri; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Vigil service will be held Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 10727 Hartsook. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 8 at the church wIth Rev. Father Vincent Nguyen, celebrant. Interment to follow at Houston National Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with his loving wife Annie. Visitation Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Cabrini Catholic Church.
