John Vignal was born on 26 Aug 1864 at uncertain location -- NY, PA, or KY. He died on 10 Jun 1941 at Hammon, OK. The story that has been passed along over the years indicates that John was somehow separated from his parents when he was only about 10 years old. This would have been about 1874. Apparently, his father had remarried and John did not get along at all with his stepmother. Someone who wished to help the boy brought him to a nearby family who was willing to give him a place to live. This family was William David Stockstill and wife Nancy Minerva Stockstill. They already had a son named Emery. The family lived in an area at the far southwest corner of Missouri around Neosho, Pioneer, and Monett. John did not spend a lot of time in Missouri, preferring a life of adventure in Texas. Somehow he traveled to Texas about 1879 and settled near the town of Vernon where he got a job working for the Worsham ranch. John worked with other cowboys in driving cattle along the Chisholm trail to Abilene and Dodge City, KS. He married Susan Elizabeth Terryon 24 Nov 1890 at Montague County, TX.Subsequently he moved to southwestern OK and homesteaded on land along the Washita river in Custer County. Would appreciate any further info that can be provided by anyone.
