A short family history complied fifty years ago by my great-uncle Frank Vyvyan Hicks indicates that my g-g-g-grandfather Captain John Hicks fought at the Battle of Waterloo with "his uncle General Richard Hussey Vyvyan."In researching both the Hicks and Vivian (Vyvyan) families, I have not been able to find any connection between the two families other than the fact that John once lived in a house owned by a Richard Vyvyan, Esq. in St. Columb Major.
Although the conncection with Richard Hussey Vyvyan could have just been a family legend, the fact that the name "Vyvyan" was passed down through the Hicks family for four generations makes it appear that a family connection of some sort must have taken place sometime during the 1780s.
If anyone has information about a Hicks-Vyvyan connection dating from late eighteenth century Cornwall, I would appreciate their passing it along.
