Here are the details that I have uncovered about Lucy Baber and Lucy Vivion. When you get a chance, please let me know what you think of the information.
The only marriage record that I have discovered for Matthew Davis is his marriage to Lucy Baber on 15 Feb 1803 in Clark Co., KY.She was the daughter of Obadiah Baber and Hannah Martin.
Genealogical notes compiled in the 1930s by Milton Vivion Davis (grandson of Milton Vivion Davis, b. 1816) indicate that Matthew Davis married Lucy Vivion and had the following children: Obadiah, Rachel, John, Silas, William, Milton, Mary, Mahala, Lucy, Nancy, Isham & Joicy. These notes also indicate that Lucy (Vivion) Davis was born in 1785 and died in 1829.
I find it interesting that the first born child was Obadiah Davis. My ancestor, Mahala B. Davis named her daughter Mahala Baber Glover, and I believe that the "B" in Mahala B. Davis stood for Mahala Baber Davis.
With these particular naming patterns, separating Lucy Baber and Lucy Vivion is very difficult.
One scenario is that Matthew first married Lucy Baber and she died shortly after the birth of Obadiah Davis. Then Matthew married Lucy Vivion and she was the mother of the remaining children.
Of course the other scenarios are that Lucy Baber and Lucy Vivion were each the mothers of all the Davis children.
Another scenario is the Lucy's name was actually Lucy Vivion Baber.
