Hello. I saw your posting from 2001 on the genealogy forum. My surname is Fomberg, but my ancestor from Germany was Andreas von Berg, born about 1828, who arrived in the US in 1850 from Bremen. He was a butcher from Scherneck, Germany and settled in Wisconsin after arriving in New York. He arrived with Eva von Berg, born about 1829. I do not know if Eva was his wife or sister, but I have not been able to trace her after they arrived in New York. Perhaps she died, or married changing her surname. Andreas had 10 children born in Wisconisn and at least 2 wives, Elizabeth and Magdalena, both born in Germany. He changed his surname from von Berg to Fomberg after arriving in the US, and his Christian name from Andreas to Andrew, but later changed it back to von Berg. His son Andrew--my great grandfather--kept his name Fomberg, but all of the other brothers and sisters kept the surname von Berg. They were Lutherans, but I have suspicions that the family could originally have been Ashkenazi Jews.
Any information that you might have on the von Berg family in Germany would be greatly appreciated.
