Most web sites list Marritje Gerrits as the only wife of Coert Stevense van Voorhees and the mother of all his children.I think there may be a problem with that conclusion. It appears that Coert was her third husband, and that he had at least one previous wife.
Marritje Gerrits (daughter of Gerrit Wolfertszen and Aeltje Cornelis) was christened in New Amsterdam on 10 Apr. 1644 with two of the witnesses being her grandfather Wolfert Gerritszen and her uncle Pieter Wolfertszen (van Couwenhoven).
She and Frans Janszen (van Hoogten) had a daughter Lysbeth christened 14 Sept. 1659 with one of the witnesses being Pieter Couwenhoven. The presence of the uncle of Marritje Gerrits who was born in 1644 being one of the witnesses to the christening of the daughter of Marritje Gerrits in 1659 lends support to the identification of the Marritje Gerrits of both records being the same person.Frans Janszen and Marritje Gerrits had at least four children:Catharina Elisabetha "Lysbeth" van Hoogten (christened 14 Sept. 1659, married 26 Aug. 1685 Pieter Janszen van Tilburg), Johannis (christened 5 Jan. 1663), Maria Helena "Merritie" van Hoogten (christened 13 Dec. 1665, married 28 May 1685 Cornelis Jacobszen Quick), and Jannetje van Hoogten (m. (1) by 1687 Wiljam Buyl, m. (2) 1705 Gabriel Bommerhof).
Frans Janszen van Hoogten received a grant of a town lot in New Amsterdam in August 1664.He was deceased by 1670, as his widow re-married on 23 July 1670 to Nicolaes Backer. So it would appear that she married Coert Stevense van Voorhees at least a few years later than has usually been suggested.
