My family in england was nanmed Vaulx or vaux french for vally they came with william the concquerer to England when they came t the states some changed their name to Voss, Vass, Vause, Voase becuase names where spelled phonecially I think the spelling changwed mostly to voss.
The Vaukx family came from Wiltshire into Williamburg The went up the Cheaspeake into Maryland both Dorchester and talbot counties. I should add that the Wiltshire family came from cumbria in Catterlyn. The proginator of the four Vaulx brother who went to Williamsburg is James Medicus Vaulx and he was a suregon in the area wiltashire it states he was a Chiregon. The four boys and one siter were Robert Vaulx who married Elizabeth Burwell (prounced Burll), Thomas Vaulx, James Vaulx who married Elisheb and had the children who went into dorchester and Talbot counties, Humphrey, John and Sussannah.
This family goes back to Hubert De Villibos (latin Spelling meaning valley) into Cumbria. Where for about 400 years they were lords of gillesland, Trymermain, and Catterlyn if you can find your link to this family they had a castle in Normandy called Vaux as early as 790 AD.
And severl families of royalty have vaulx descendants somewhere in their lineage.
Because they lived on the border of scotland some went into scotland. and eventually the name was changed to Vans or Vance.
I hope this gives you some history of how may family went Vaulx to Voss. I should tell that the name Vaulx is pronunced like "bow: only with a "V". the french pronunciation..
