I have Obediah Vowell listed in my tree.As the son of Jacob Vowell from Devon County, England.Family lore is that Jacob and John were on the same boat coming to the USA.JACOB TOOK SICK FROM A DISEASE ON THE SHIP, DIED ANd WAS BURIED AT SEA.JOHN, HIS BROTHER WAS a school Master and indentured to the king. (Sorry, have a new keyboard and it stuck) Jacob was free. Schroadus Ship Records list John 22 years old b. 1752 on the Ship Jenny & Polly came to Virginia from London in 1774 then sent on to Maryland. Other records at the Indiana State Library list that Jacob Vowell was to Posess a land Lot in 1773 in Georgia and asked Where is Jacob???
I have checked out to see where these two, John & Jacob Vowell can be.I cannot find Jacob so assume he did die at sea. I find John as, John Valux in Maryland, Caroline County, in 1790.I do not find him in 1800. In 1810 he is listed as a merchant with VOWELL & BRIGGS (Hauling business for the Government in covered Wagons.) (Source, 1810 Census and family) In 1804 he died, drowned (Source. England Records) and his son is in Indiana then goes to Tennessee, Greene County. John born 1752 died in 1804, drowned. He married Mary Elizabeth Battalley (Battle) in 1781. I find nothing more on Obediah until 1800 when he was listed in Greenville SC on the US Federal Census with 3 males 1 female andHim & His wife. Just thought Obediah researchers would like to see this. Artie Jewell Voils Ashley
