Hi, I am park ranger at Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, Georgia. During the Civil War a Confederate prisoner of war camp, Camp Lawton, was located here.
The commandant of this camp was Captain D.W. Vowles. I know that Vowles was from Missouri, possibly Marion County. Previously he had served on the staff of General Thomas Harris, 2nd Division Missouri State Guard, and on the staff of General M.E. Green. He was later assigned to duty with General John H. Winder in Richmond, then at Andersonville.
Captain Vowles was brother of Newton Vowles, whom he described as "my brother, the old doctor", who was an Assistant Surgeon in the 2nd Division.
Any further information that anyone might have, such as birth date, death date, occupation, life after the war, etc., would be greatly appreciated.
