Nola, Thanks so very much.
I had information that indicated Thomas Wafer married Elizabeth Laughlin, but I didn't know where or when. Now I have it...but...
...Do you know who this Thomas Wafer parent's are? I haven't checked the 1800 census of Georgia yet, but it appears Francis and Sarah (Laughlin) Wafer were in Georgia for eleven or twelve years prior to moving back to Edgefield SC in 1802 and then on to Livingston Co.(later Caldwell Co) KY. Francis' brother Thomas Wafer is also missing from the 1800 census of Pendelton Dist., SC so perhaps they were both down there in GA together and Thomas had a son Thomas. Francis had a son named Thomas, and maybe this is the Thomas. Something when I get organized to research...
Apparently James Wafer's (son of Francis) autobiographymust make reference that when the family was in Georgia during this period, they had to live in a stockade because of Indian trouble and left in 1802 to return to Edgefield SC to gather with friends, prior to moving to Kentucky.
Sarah Wafer's parents, were John Laughlin and Mary White. I have that John was from Dervock, County Antrim, Ireland. Had immigrated and settled Big Springs Cumberland Co. PA. Had married Mary White there. They had most, if not all their 7 children in PA. They moved in 1771 to York Co. PA. It is believed John died York Co SC 1773 or 1774. widow Mary (White) Laughlin possibly remarried a person by the name of Patton sometime prior to 1803. widow Laughlin apparenlty went with the Wafer/Margrave/Laughlin families to Livingston/Caldwell KY in 1803 and died there. Any additional information on John or Mary would be greatly appreciated.
The 1803 immigration from SC to Livingston/Caldwell Co involved a larger number of families related by marriage and/or blood...I know the following all traveled there about 1803: Jesse & Mary (Laughlin) Margrave; Francis & Sarah (Laughlin) Wafer; William & Mary (Morrow?) Laughlin (they went on to Missouri 1808); Anthony & Sarah (Wherry) Laughlin; Horatio & Nancy (Laughlin) Durley; James & Rachael (Dalrymple) Laughlin; William & Mary (Thomas) Drennan. widow Mary (White) Laughlin, wife of John Laughlin who died 1774-75, parents of the Laughlin's listed above. Possibly she had remarried a Patton.
John & Mary (Dalrymple) Laughlin did not move from SC with the other relations to Kentucky in 1803, but moved in 1806-07 to Brown Co. Ohio. It is believed John was very much against slavery. They moved to Bond Co. Illinous in 1819 where daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Wafer in 1820. widow Sarah Laughlin Wafer and son James & Sarah (Elder) Wafer family had moved to Bond Co ILL in 1817. Horatio Durley family and John Margrave families also moved on to Bond Co ILL in 1817 era. So these families had co-located together again.
John Laughlin's son Samuel (Elizabeth Wafer's brother) is reported to have helped with the underground railway bringing slaves north, however he died 1849, so this is mighty early to me for that. Have no source other than reported oral tradition. John Laughlin was apparently known to be a staunch Presbyterian adamently opposed to slavery. The Laughlin cousins ended up on both sides of the civil war.
Thanks again for sharing your research...advise if there is anything I can clarify...
Thanks
Jim Laughlin
