In Ben's 1788 Will, he mentioned daughters Ann, Rebecca and Catherine Wailes (so still single as of 1788) and a son George.I believe the following marriage records from Prince George's County for an Ann, a Kitty (a widely recognized nickname for Catherine), a Rebecca and a George refer to these four children.
Ann Wailes & Thomas Clark 10-29-1791 Kitty B. Wailes & John Estep 5-30-1795 Rebeccah Wailes & George Burroughs 7-6-1792 George Wales & Martha Naylor 2-25-1783
If these three women married when they were between the ages of 16 and 26, then Ann would have been born between about 1765 and 1775, Catherine ("Kitty") would have been born between about 1769 and 1779, and Rebecca between about 1766 and 1776.If George married between the ages of 19 and 29, then he was likely born between about 1754 and 1764.This helps narrow the estimates of birth dates in my earlier post.
I would tentatively suggest that George was the son of Sarah rather than of Susannah.I would guess that he was born about 1763-1764, and so was probably born between William Howard Wailes (1761) and Levin Covington Wailes (1768).
Given the births of the earlier children, and trying to account for a fairly typical spacing of births at between 18 and 36 months, with about 24 months being typical, then I would guess that Ann was born EITHER in 1765-1766 (after George (1763-1764) but before Levin (1768) OR between July 1773 and December 1774 (i.e., after John).I would guess Rebecca was born between 1773-1776, and Catherine ("Kitty") between 1775-1779.
Because I have not found a marriage record for Sarah, she might have been the single female, age 16 to 26, living with widow Susannah Wailes in 1800.
In addition, because George Wailes had married in 1783, I would conclude that the male under 16 in Levin Wailes's household at the time of the 1790 census was Hezekiah.
One source suggests that Sarah (Howard) Wailes died as early as 1772, and another suggests she died 1778 or later. Thus, it is still unclear (to me, at least), whether Sarah or Susannah was the mother of Ann, Rebecca and Catherine.
