Walke is old German. It is a trade name associated with ship building.
My Walke ancestorsmoved from England (probably Bristol) to Barbados.Three Barbados born Walke brothers were sea captains in support of the American side of the American Revolution. At least one of the three became a major Plantation owner in Princess Anne County, Virginia.Wolfsnare is one of the older Walke plantations.http://virginiabeachhistory.org/upperwolfsnarehouse.htmhttp://virginiabeachhistory.org/upperwolfsnarehouse.htm
Dr. John Robertson Walke had 8 children or so out of marriage. One of them ended up working for the railroad in Danville, VA.He was station master for the real "Danville Train" in the Joan Baez song.He prospered there and married into families who owned large tobacco farms. One of Dad's first cousin's was a Walke who did very well in the US Navy during WWII.He had a long successful career as an officer.I believe he settled in Florida.
Other Walke's married into the Price family in Greensboro, NC.They were associated with a large insurance company.
I heard there was another group of farming Walke's in Rockingham or Guilford Counties in NC.The last contact I've heard of with those cousins was over 40 years ago.
