Walke is not a common name so odds are your ancestors came from Barbados.
I first heard about all this when researchers associated with Physic Hill tracked down my family in the Danville area. That was around 1987.The work Betty Cox Collie did is built on the work from the Physic Hill researchers.
The illegitimate generation didn't sit well with all the very conservative relatives in VA.Of course going back to the Plantation days, the wealthy men commonly had lots of children out-of-wedlock with various servants, commoners, etc. Most people with colonial European ancestors will have the same lineage.
The VA Walke family were major players in the Civil War, but not with the south. One of the biggest US Navy war heroes was Henry Walke http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/pers-us/uspers-w/h-walke.htmhttp://www.history.navy.mil/photos/pers-us/uspers-w/h-walke.htm .These VA Walke's left the south and helped establish Ohio.Look at the history of early Ohio around Chillicothe http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Ross/RossChapV.htmhttp://www.heritagepursuit.com/Ross/RossChapV.htm.
Danville was the last capital of the CSA so Union roots were not something to "remember" until recent years.
US Navy service is definitely something in the bloodline.Dad's cousin was a senior officer. One of my brothers is a retired Captain.I have nephews in service now.
