Title: "Walker-King and Connection Families - Who's Who"
Author: Ina Walker - King
Media: Book
By Bill Willise-mail address is: [email protected]
I've seen the lineage as you present it a number of times on the web. I believe there are a number of problems with it.
as a preamble, I need to point out that as far as I can tell prior to the family's appearance on Borden's grant ca. 1739 there is little if any documented information on the family--- other than what's in White 1902. (By documentation I mean primary source material---court records, contemporary letters, or memoirs from persons contemporary with the events they describe, and the like.---undocumented materials in published genealogies, web sites, etc. don't count)
As far as I know there is NO information on the lineage other than what's in White 1902 prior their immigration to PA. Since White seems to be our only source of information prior to 1738, anything inconsistent with that work has to be viewed with some skepticism. (Not that White is infallible---its just that her data is the ONLY thing we have prior to 1738.)
The following are cases in point
As far as I can determine the following have no plausible basis. At least, no one I've asked has
ever been able to provide a documentary basis for these items. (If you in fact have a documentable basis for any of this I would be greatly appreciative if you would substantitate any of the following)
1.George Walker bn. ca. 1618 in Wigton , Wigtonshire, Scotland md. ?
There is nothing in White 1902 to support this.
There WAS a George Walker in Wigton in the early 17th century. What if any relationship he has with John Walker I is unknown.
2. John Alexander Walker I bn. ca. 1650 in Wigton Scotland md. Jane McKnight ca.
WHite lists John I as simply John Walker. No middle name, and certainly no DOB. I suspect that the DOB is a plausible guess based on John II's marriage c. 1702---assuming he'd have been about 20 yeas of age, then we'd guess a DSOB of 1680 or so, hence a DOB for his father of at least no later than 1760, with c. 1650 being a happy medium.
In America, trimomics begin to appear in the records about 1780, implying that they began to be used to name children about 1760. I've no reason to believe that the practice would have been adopted earlier in Scotland than in America,
and its very unlikely that anyone born c. 1650 (other than perhaps nobility) would have received a trinomic. (If John I's parents were early users of trinomics, you'd have expected that the practice would have continued in their own line---it didn't, so I think it very unlikely that John I's parents bestowed a trinomic on their son John).
3. John Walker II ... married Katherine Rutherford Jan 7, 1701/1702 in County Downe
White has them marrying in Scotland in 1702. She also places the family in the area of Newry, not County Down. Newry is very consistent with them leaving Ireland from Strangford Bay. If they were livingin County Down, you'd expect a departure from Londonderry, or perhaps to have been picked up at one of the coastal embarkation points along the north shore.
Those who like to push an early Cowan would probably like it if the family lived in County Down...but as far as I know they lived in Newry.
4. John Walker III ... died Nov. 17 1778 in Broadmeadows, Washington
a. His will was probabted in 1778. He actually died somewhat before that. His will includes mention of his son Samuel (presumedly living at the time the will was made out), but Samuel clearly died before 1778---probably 1776. The precise date for John III's death is not known as far as I know---but I usually assume sometime between 1773 and 1776 ---likely 1774/75---as that brackets documentary evidence that has him alive in 1773, and dead by 1776.
b. "Broadmeadows" is a term applied to John III's property on sinking Creek by a later owner, Donnelson, Barr, Barr , and Barr---land speculators who purchased the property from John IV about 1785. They gave it the name Broadmeadows. They purchased a substantial number of tracts about this time, giving them equally fanciful names presumedly in the hopes of improving their resale value---a common practice amongst the speculators of the time.
6. John Walker IV bn. ca. 1727 in Washington County VA. died Feb. 18, 1796 in Meadow Creek, Green Co. TN. married Mary Anderson
a. The 1727 DOB is prior to the marriage of John III to Ann Houston. I believe you could justify a c. 1735 DOB, or even c. 1734, but not 1727.
b. In any case, Washington County did not exist at the time of John IV's birth. No one could legally settle in the Castle's Woods area until 1769, and available codumentation suggests the Walkers got there no earlier than 1771.---most likely, whether you say he was born in 1727, or 1734, he was born in Chester Co PA, or perhaps Cecil County MD.
c. The DOD you quote is for John Walker of Meadow Creek in Greene Co Maryland. His will identifies his wife as Mary. Edwards and Frizell 1978 identify her as Mary Anderson, but do not give a basis for that. Until recently I was of the opinion that John of Meadow Creek was in fact John IV. New information has forced me to revise that opinion. WHile I think there is a possibility that John of Meadow Creek is John IV, the preponderance of data points to an identity between John IV and John Walker Sr. of Ellejoy Creek in Blount County. That John Walker is sometimes known as Indian Killer or Staddlin John.
The remainder of this is outside what we can learn from White 1902.
7.John Walker Jr. bn. ? dien ca. 1816 in Blount County, TN. married 1.Unknown -
Children: 1. Samuel Walker
married Rebecca Magill May 22, 1788 in Green County, TN
a) This seems to be a confusion of several family lines. According to E&F John Walker Jr., son of John of Meadow Creek married Rebecca Magill 1788. Land transactions mentioned in E&F 1978:135, indicate that this John Walker Jr. survived until after 1822, and remained in Greene Co.
The Samuel you mention is probably the eldest son of Indian Killer.
As you can see, my data disagrees considerbly from yours. If you can provide documentation supporting and of the elements of the lienage that I dispute, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it.
However, back to the original point, I can't queston your data on Charles of Alabama (since I have no data on him). However, If your data points to him coming from Blount Co. then I think it plausible that he could be considered one of the married sons of Indian Killer who passed through Blount County 1788. Of course, that would mean your DOB was in error there by 20 years or more.
You can go back and read what all these people have written to each other, And write to them. And may get more from them. It’s been a few years since they wrote this on this site. They may be able to give you more research on these people you are looking for.
I just do look-ups for others to help. Maybe one day I Pray some one would run in to my line of Walker’s and help me out. I’ve been researching them for years. And haven’t got lucky yet. Good Luck.
Willie
