Seeking information on a Walker family that originated in Prince George’s County Maryland and migrated in late 1790’s to Ontario County NY, Allegany County NY, and Livingston County Michigan.
The book “The Walker Families” by W.N. Hurley states a Richard Walker Jr of Prince George’s County was born ca. 1730. This Richard was the son of a Richard Walker SR born ca. 1710 of the same county and state. Richard JR married a woman named Polly and had the following children: Charles, Henry (married Keziah Burgess), Richard (married Mary Gilpin), Joseph (married Henrietta Maria Hepburn), William (married Elizabeth Bridget), Elizabeth (married Henry Phillips), Benjamin (married Mary Pumphrey) and George.
Richard Walker III (son of Richard Walker JR and grandson of Sr mentioned above) was born ca. 1755 and married Mary Gilpin in Prince George’s Maryland 1778. This couple removed to Ontario County NY and had the following children: Sally, Jane, Mary, Benjamin, and Henson Walker.
According to Mr. Hurley the lineage of Richard Walker should follow:
Richard Walker born ca. 1710 - PGC Maryland – possible son of Charles Walker Sr
Richard Walker born ca. 1735 - PGC Maryland - married Polly (Chloe?)
Richard Walker born ca. 1755 – PGC Maryland - married Mary Gilpin
I do have estate papers showing a Richard Walker Jr “planter” of Prince George’s County Maryland was married to a Chloe (Owen?) and died in 1769. His account lists “$29 cash and goods paid to Richard Walker, father of the deceased”. This Richard Jr’s inventory is witnessed by Richard Walker Sr (father), James Walker, Phillip Berry, and Benjamin Berry. The Gideon Walker born 1735 Maryland has a son Mareen Duvall Walker who married Ann Berry, daughter of Phillip Berry. My thinking is that wife of Richard Walker JR (b.1730), who is listed as Polly in the Hurley book, is actually Chloe.
The Hurley book then goes on to detail the lineage of Richard Walker’s son named Henson Walker. Born 1787 Prince Georges Maryland, Henson married 1st Mary Frasier and 2nd Matilda Arnold in Maryland, Henson died 1853 Livingston County Michigan. Children of Henson Walker were born in Prince George’s Maryland, Ontario County New York, and Livingston County Michigan. Children named: Perry, Mary, John, George, Henson, Sarah, Richard, Emeline, Thomas, Robert, Lewis, Cassie. Find A Grave website suggests Henson Walker was educated in Baltimore Maryland were he met Miss Arnold prior to moving to New York.

Another Walker that might be connected to this group is Gideon L. Walker. According to census records this Gideon L. Walker was born in either NY or Mich around 1813, however he first appears in the census in Allegheny Co. NY in 1850. He later moves from NY to Prince George’s County Maryland. Land records show Gideon L. Walker purchased land “situated between Western Branch and Collington Branch streams” and “bounded on the west by land of Richard Mullikin and the east by the Patuxent River…beginning at a line of a tract of land called PARROTTS THICKETT”. Interestingly this is the same area in Maryland were the “Bacon Hall” Walker’s leased land and also bordered Duvall property. An older Gideon Walker born ca. 1735 married Pricilla Duvall but this family moved to PA and KY around 1782. Could it be that Gideon L. Walker was named after this Gideon Walker? I find it Ironic that another Gideon Walker moves from NY to Maryland and buys land in the exact area were older generation of Walker’s used to reside. Gideon L. Walker went on to become a judge in Washington D.C. and died in 1876.
1876 August Gideon L, Walker died in DC. Remains to be shipped to NY.[ Death notice in DC Critic Record, Aug. 30, 1876] So far searches have not revealed where in NY he is buried.
