(From the Oct. 23, 1925 issue of the Sequoyah County Democrat - Sallisaw, OK): "Ed Frye, Indian attorney of Sallisaw, who admitted a yearning for the superintendency of the Five Civilized Tribes in the recent investigation here, today is a former chief o the Cherokee Nation. Richard B. Choate of Bunch, Ok, is chief of the Cherokee tribe by presidential appointment.Shade Wallen, superintendent of the Five Civilized Tribes, said yesterday that he had received word from the national capital that Choate and George Jones had been named by President Coolidge as chief of the Cherokee and Seminole nations, respectively."
He was the son of John Wallen and Ellender Stapleton Wallen.He was my great grandmother's cousin.She named on of her sons, Shade Lee, afer him.After the death of her husband, Tom Pleasant Lee, He and his son, also a Shade Wallen, visited her at my gandmother's home.
He was born February 15, 1860, died on July 29, 1937, and is buried in the Fairland, OK, cemetery.He was married three times:First, to Viola Goddard, second, to Minnie Miller, and third, to Arminta Martin.
