Walls, Green, May, Rhea and Camp/1967 Childers Letter
Granbury, TX Public Library has a file in the genealogy dept. called “The Judges Papers”. I was recently there to look at these papers to see if there was any information on the Rhea family that I might not have.
The Judge was Henry Davis and he kept many notes on scrap paper. He apparently was interested in the history and genealogy of the early residents of Hood County and corresponded with people about their families. It appears that the County clerks of the day referred the records request to him.
All of the families listed in the subject are mentioned in these two letters. I am a descendant of P.V. and Mary Rhea through Andrew Henderson Rhea and know their history (pertaining to my own line) back to Lincoln Co.TN but I cannot vouch for the correctness of the Walls, Camp, Green or May family information mentioned. I have not researched these particular people.
I do have an interest in the Camp and Green families. If anyone can tell me to which Camp and Green families, those mentioned belong with, I would appreciate it. I have copied the letters (sic) punctuation and all, but omitted the address it was sent from.
Office of the County Clerk
Hood County, Granbury, Texas
Dear Sirs,
I am looking for the following records:
a) Birth certificate or record of Camp, Mary Adeline, born December 23, 1881, the daughter of Camp, Washington and May, Nancy.
b) Marriage record of WALLS, Jack Rhea, and Camp, Mary Adeline married on August 15, 1897 at Granbury, Texas.
c) The 1880 Census records for residents of Hood County:
Camp, Washington
Camp, Nancy
WALLS, Jack Rhea
WALLS, Edward
WALLS, Jane
If you have these records available would you please let me know how I may obtain copies and the cost of each? I would be quite appreciative if you let me know if these records are not available so I may know to search elsewhere.
Sincerely,
Mrs.H.S. Childers
Henry Davis,
Granbury, Texas 76048
My Dear Mr. Davis:
I was so very glad to get your letter with the information concerning my inquiries about my grandparents, Jack and Mary Walls, and your offer to help me search for the information which I need.
I am the daughter of Belle Walls, the daughter of Jack and Mary Walls. My Mother married Walter Bernhardt Johnson and they live here in Sand Springs. My grandparents Jack and Mary Walls, lived here until their deaths a few years ago, and both are buried here in the Sand Springs Woodlawn Cemetery. Jack died on December 4, 1962. Mary Camp Walls died April 18, 1964
My Mother tells me that she is not sure whether the R. in Grandad’s name was for Rhea or not. Granddad always told me that his name was Rufus Rastus Andrew Jackson Plez Vincent Rhea Walls, so I am assuming that the Rhea was his name. He just always went by J. R. Walls.
I will be happy to send you any information that I can in order to help you complete your files, if you will let me know what you need. I have written to Rhea County Tennessee to find what I can there about the Rheas.
You indicated that you knew Grandad. Did you know him? My mother also tells me that her grandmother Nancy May Camp, after being widowed, married again and that she married a man by the name of Davis, this would have been around the year 1910. Would he have been any relation to you?
Mother tells me that a sister of Nancy May married a James. I am interested in finding that connection. I want to find where the Camps and the Mays came from, too.
The brother of Jack Walls, Joseph Andew (sic) married Lucy Camp, the sister of Mary Adeline Camp. Joe and Lucy Walls and Edward and Jane Walls are buried in Hall County, near Brice, Texas.
Jack and Mary Walls had fifteen children, of which twelve are now living. Three sons died in infancy.
I am enclosing a check for $10.00 and hope that we can be of great help to each other.
Sincerely Yours, Mrs. C.H. Childers
My note: The Rhea family, (Pleasant Vincent or P.V.and Mary Elizabeth(Fanning/Fannin) Rhea) she spoke of, came to Johnson Co., (the portion that became Hood Co.) TXin the early 1850s from Lincoln County, not Rhea County Tennessee. They were married 1845 in Fat creek, Bedford,TN.

John Walls was the father of Edward Elisha Walls and he was half Cherokee Indian. His father Eli Walls was a full blood Cherokee Indian and was killed by his own people when John was just a boy. A man by the name of Tom Green raised John. Where this was, I do not know. Where the Walls came from, I do not know.
Could this have any connection with the John Walls you found with a large family from Kentucky?Eli Walls was supposed to have raised thoroughbred horses.
I would like to have photo static or certified copies of records if they can be obtained, and notation of the books and page numbers of where you found the records and information. I will send you money for copies which you have made for me, just tell me what you need.
Would you send me the information on Sam Wall from Indiana which you found? I have a connection on my husband’s side of the family with a Wall in it and we have no idea where he came from. Maybe this might fit in.
Eloise Clilders
(My Note: The Sarah Rhea (no maiden name) shementions as wife of P.V. Rhea is actually Mary Elizabeth (Fannin/Fanning ) Rhea
Also, FYI, I was advised at the library that if a source for any info in the files is required, to list the source as "The Judges Papers".
