I wanted to let you know that Nancy Turman, wife of Edward Walthall, was born in Mecklenburg Co., Va. - not Scotland. She was the daughter of Martin and Ann "Nancy" (Herndon) Turman. Have you learned more about Nancy since you posted your message? Do you know when she died? I was looking for information on her husband, Edward Walthall, and their children when I saw your message.
May I ask how you know that Edward Walthall died abt. June 6, 1823 in Jasper Co., Ga?Did he leave a will?
Edward Walthall is on the 1790 tax return list for Wilkes Co., Ga. He lived near his brother-in-law, William Haley, and in the same district as his Turman in-laws [District AAA, Captain Thompson's District].He and Nancy are found in Elbert Co. deeds from 1790 to 1797, then are mentioned as being of "Jackson Co." in a deed dated Oct. 1802.Have you found them in Jackson Co. during this time?Do you know when they went to Jasper Co.?This would help tell us which county their children were born in.
I found Charles F. Walthall on the 1870 Meriwether Co., Ga., census, age 78, b. Ga.So he must have been bornca. 1792 in Elbert Co.His will is dated 19 May 1872 and was recorded June 3, 1872 in Meriwether Co., Ga.In the will he named his wife, Jane [is this Jincy Crouch?]; his nephew John Thornton [named to live with Jane to take care of her and the land]; Charles F. McWilliams [relationship not given, named to inherit the homestead following the death of Jane] a minor son of Andrew J. McWilliams; step-daughter Mary E. Thornton; and Andrew J. McWilliams was named executor.
