I am researching my Walther family in St. Paul, Ramsey & Dakota Co. Minnesota. I recently discovered that my great grandfather, Julius F. Walter, b. 29 Dec 1864 d. 12 Sept 1933 buried Forrest Lawn Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota, father's name was William. On Julius death certificate it lists his parents as William Walther and Louisa Schairfe (which I don't think is correct spelling). Both born in Germany.
In Julius' obituary it states that he was born in Chicago, Cook co. Illinois. It also states that in 1882 when 18 years old, he left Chicago and went to St. Paul,Minnesota.
I am fairly new to research, but a friend has helped me this weekend and we've made some interesting discoveries.
Based on watching your posts, we started comparing the names that appeared on what City Directory information I currently have and noticed a pattern. From this census record we noticed that Ernest & some of his children also were in St. Paul in the early 1880's: Mattoon, Coles, Illinois Source: FHL Film 1254183National Archives Film T9-0183Page 151B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Ernest WALTHER Self MW46 GERMANY Occ:Farmer Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Francis WALTHER Dau F S W19 IL Occ: Keeps House Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Augusta WALTHER Dau F S W 17 IL Occ: Keeps House Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Louis WALTHER Son M S W 16 IL Occ: Farmer Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Otto WALTHER Son M S W 14 IL Occ: At School Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Powell WALTHER Son M S W 10 IL Occ: At School Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Charles WALTHER Son M S W 8 IL Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY William WALTHER Son M S W 5 IL Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Henry WALTHER Son M S W 1 IL Fa: GERMANY Mo: GERMANY Charles LINDERMAN Other M S W 29 MO Occ: Farm Laborer Fa: PRUSSIA Mo: PRUSSIA Truman SMITH Other M S W33 NJ Occ: Carpenter Fa: ME Mo: MD
On the St. Paul city directories: 1882 to 1885 William Walther lived at 122 George St, St Paul
1885 Ernest lived around the corner and up a few streets from William (which I think is mine) at 421 1/2 Robert St, and there also is an Erdman F. Walther boarding at the same location.
These two locations are just south of the Mississppi river from downtown. Then I find north of the Mississippi river downtown areas: 1884 & 1885 Bernhardt Emil Walther who owned a saloon in this area lst at 769 Jackson & then 1886-1890 at 925 Rice. Otto Walther 1884-85, a florist at 9th & Oak 1885 Louis Walther 189 4th st 1885 Paul Geranium ave at Abell St.(whom had a son Rudolph living 1917 in the same area) 1889 Edmund F. Walther 2 Irvine Park a hotel
As I said Paul's son Rudolph was living in this area in 1917 and my Julius lived 1889-90 on 497 Farrington, which is just southwest a short distance of these locations.
All these areas are in very close proximity to each other. I am going to go get all the census records and city directory listings for these families in St. Paul, both in Ramsey and Dakota county for the early 1880's and do some more comparisons. I have mapped out all the info I currently have and it appears that Ernest and my William may have come to St. Paul about the same timeframe.
I would like to know if your Ernest may have gone to St. Paul with some of his children. It appears that they are there.
I also noticed you didn't have an Otto in the children of Ernest, but an Adolph Robert. Otto appears in the 1880 census, but not Adolph living in his father's household.
Do you think we have the same families? I had jotted down some info a long time ago that I never really looked at before from the 1900 census of which Bernhard Emil was born Aug 1841; Henry born July 1833; Ernest April 1837 (I need to recheck to make sure this is correct).
I would like to further compare information, since Paul had a son Frank, born 15 Oct 1883 St Paul, DAKOTA CO. Minnesota & a son Rudolph B. Walther born 20 Dec 1891 St. Paul Dakota Co. Minnesota(Ramsey & Dakota set on the line dividing the household's of all these Walthers)
