Puzzle below the facts. I'm digging at the walls here trying to find Mary Ann Ward, b.1812 in Tennessee d.1876 Van Buren Co. Arkansas. She married John Douglass, b. 1808 Cherokee, North Carolina, d. Van Buren co. arkansas. Daughter is Nancy (ann?) Douglass. b. 1837 d. 1916 m. Thomas R. Bennett
I'm trying to find her parents, marriage date, anything else about her linage mostly. It's been a dead end so far but I have come across a curious puzzle: Nancy Ward was a well known Cherokee woman of the time and Mary Ann Ward-Douglass named her daughter Nancy. Nancy Douglass married Thomas Bennett and has at least two children; their son Oliver Hazard Perry Bennett appears to have been named after Oliver Hazard Perry Brewer another notable member of the Cherokee nation. Nancy and Thomas' daughter Oragon then marries a Brewer man named Melvin Green Brewer.
Was it normal at this time to name children after notable Cherokee individuals? or was Oliver Hazard Perry a common name? I know Nancy is. Insight? Clues?
