Hello
Jerry G. Warthan here.
Trying to find my roots also.
Believe we came the southern route thru Georgia from Virginia.
Have a family tree of a George Washington Warthan (my ggrandf.) coming from a Sylvester J. (Cumberland Gap VA.) then from a Richard Warthan (same location),then from a Lewis Warthan, then John Warthan and brother Charles immigration to Tidewater VA circa 1790.
Don't know if we are connected or not but have found few with this spelling.
1850 Federal census locates a clan of "Warthens" in Washington Co. Ga. with a George W. age 15 listed.
G.W.'s Civil War Pension records indicates he arrived in Red River Co. Texas Dec 1852.
Don't have hard facts that the clan in Ga. are the same but a Thomas J. and a William show up in Ga. and on deed records in Red River Co.
I believe it is a typical misspelling of the record recorder as Wortham , Wartham, etc. show up on the deed records.
One more fact there is a Sylvester with the Warthen spelling in the Warthan Cemetery in Red River Co.
There may have been a separation/split/division somewhere upline for me to have shown up in Texas, go figure!!
