Patricia:My mother was born Dorothea Lauten in Washington DC on August 16, 1904.Her father was Gustav(e) Lauten, who had one sister, who would be Otilla (the spelling in your original posting would be correct I'm sure, she was called Tillie in the family) and several half-siblings named Waterhalter by an earlier marriage of his mother. There may actually have been an even earlier marriage.Gustave was born on February 25, 1876.I believe his sister was younger. My mother's Bible lists Gustave's birthplace as "USA" which isn't very helpful. My dim memory was that it was in Chicago, but the everyone seemed to be in the Washington area when I was young.I know that Tillie had at least one descendant who was my age who went by the last name "Martin" but whether that was a degradation of Stegemerten or whether it was due to marriage to a Martin, I'm not sure.
