Does anybody have any connection with a carpenter family of Gwatkins who originated in St Weonards and moved to Forest of Dean ? I have William Gwatkin born about 1786 in St Weonards who was living in the Blakeney,Gloucs, area in 1841 and 1851. I think he is quite likely to have been the father of another William, also born in St Weonards c.1815, who was living in Lydney, Gloucs in 1851 and had been moving around a bit before then. His eldest son, John, was born in Blaina, South Wales around 1834. The elder William's wife was Ann, and he had children John, Susanna, George, James and Thomas - plus a niece, Caroline Gwatkin. The younger William was married to Fanny and had children John,Fanny, William, Joseph, Anne, Susanna, Edward and Thomas. Does anyone have any connection with or information about these carpenter Gwatkins ?
The John born in South Wales was my 3xgreat grandfather. He and a number of his brothers and sisters moved to the mining areas of Staffordshire. He married my 3x great grandmother in Northwood by Stoke on Trent in 1860, and died a couple of years later, so my 2x great grandmother was brought up by a stepfather, who took the family to Rotherham. The other Gwatkin brothers, though, seem to have moved on to mines in the Wigan area - so I would be interested to hear from anyone with Gwatkin ancestors there or in the Potteries.
