"LaRue Elton Wegner was born on March 5, 1930, in Hawarden, Iowa to the late William and Radah (Wilkinson) Wegner. LaRue was baptized into the Christian faith in 1930 in Hawarden, Iowa and later confirmed at the Peace Lutheran Church of Sioux Center, Iowa. He received his early education in country school and later graduated from Hudson High School in 1948. LaRue then entered the United States Army and served in the Korean War and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was later honorably discharged and farmed in the Hudson area.On March 24, 1956, LaRue was united in marriage to Marlene Edna Winterfeld at the Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with four daughters: Eve, RoxAnne, Sandra, and Denise. After marriage, LaRue and Marlene farmed in the Ireton, Iowa area. In 1960, they moved to a farm in Murray County and farmed until retiring in 2002. Along with farming, LaRue worked as a seed corn salesman and sold Archer Oil. He also worked at various farming jobs, did custom combining and was a recognized wheat farmer by the state and nation. For fourteen years, LaRue and Marlene spent their winters in Florida. His leisure time was spent with children and grandchildren. LaRue enjoyed traveling and it included four continents. He had many hobbies which included fishing, baseball, woodworking, collecting coins, toy tractors, and taking pictures.
In 2004, LaRue and Marlene moved to Windom and recently, LaRue's health been declining and on Tuesday evening, July 17, 2007, at the age of 77 years, LaRue passed away peacefully at his home in Windom surrounded by his family. LaRue was a member of the Chandler/Hadley Lutheran Church; Wheat Growers of Minnesota; 52 year member of the American Legion and was a 4-H adult leader in Murray County.
His dedicated family who mourns his loss includes LaRue's wife of fifty-one years Marlene Wegner, Windom; four daughters: Eve (Tom) LaBrun, Montgomery; RoxAnne (Jeff) Thompson, Alexandria; Sandra (Les) Mitchell, Rosemount; Denise (Jeff) Gilbertson, Windom; nine grandchildren: Stephanie Thompson, Fairmont; Jennifer Thompson, Alexandria; Clayton, Mary Lynn and Dianne LeBrun, Montgomery; Tom and Jesse Mitchell, Rosemount; and Ryan and Luke Gilbertson, Windom. LaRue ws preceded in death by his parents.
Celebratrion of Life was held Saturday, July 21, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom, MN with Pastor David Lightner, officiating. Organist was Carol Vought, Honorary bearers were LaRue’s grandchildren: Jennifer Thompson, Clayton LeBrun, Mary Lynn LeBrun, Dianne LeBrun, Tom Mitchell, Jesse Mitchell, Ryan Gilbertson, and Luke Gilbertson.
