Descendants of John WIDENER
Generation No. 1
John WIDENER was born in Germany(German Immigrant), and died 1801.
Widener in German Means " Keeper of the Bible"
The widener family is of very ancientorigin and may be discovered in very old genealogical and historical works. The beginning, no doubt was among the early German tribes, but correct and authentic information is lost in the mist of centuries past. The name at the present time is quite common in the Wurttemberg area of Germany.
A search of old church records reveal the familiar names of John, Jacob, William and Henry, though in German, but the relationship is only a matter of conjecture. The name can be found spelled several different ways, probally in different parts of Germany,ie. Widner, Weidner, Widenor, Widener, but it is believed the correct spelling would be Weidner. Be that as it may, our family spells it Widener. Wideners, however spelled, are found in many areas of Germany such as Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Bavaria, Prussia, Saleure, etc. The above information is from the book "Wideners in America" by Howard Hamlin Widener - 1904.
As a matter of general interest, another branch of the family immigrated from Germany and settled in the Philadelphia, PA area. They arrived, according to an article in a 1937 issue of Life magazine, in 1681. One of the decendants of these immigrants, a Mr. Peter A. B. Widener was born in 1834, in Philadelphia and served on the Board of Education, was city treasure and involved in many civic affairs. He became very wealthy in the meat packing business and Street Railway businesses. He died in 1875.
In later years, Joseph E. Widener and others of the family donated a vast collection of paintings and sculptures to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. They also donated a library of about 2,000,000 volumes to Harvard, established colleges and many other worthwhile projects.
The name can be found in many publications, such as "Who's Who in America", "The Very Rich Book" by Jacqueline Thompson, "The Very Rich" by Joseph Thorndike, Jr.
"The People's Chronology" by Trager, etc. German Immigrants, John Widener and son, John Thaddeus Widener, came to the colonies in the middle 1700's. John Widener bound out his other son Michael to a wealthy German family to raise money for passage to America.
John Widener settled in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania where they earned money to pay off Michaels indenture andhe arrived in the colonies at about the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Michael served as a Private in the "Frontier Army" under George Washington, was present and on duty during the seige of Yorktown, present at the surrender of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown and was detailed to escort (Guard Duty) to transport Hessian prisoners of war to Winchester, VA. (The information concerning Michael Widener is from a statement by him in his application for pension- American Revolution).
According to a "History of Southwest Virginia and Washington County" by Lewis Preston Summers, the three first to settle in a community for many years known as Wideners Valley, VA., where John Widener, Paulsen Rause and John Jones. John Widener and his son Thaddeus, left Philadelphia and moved to Rockingham County, VA., then to Fort Thompson (On present Huff farm near Glade Springs in Washington County, VA.) They then moved into and became the first settlers in Wideners Valley as mentioned above.
The above information was taken from the book "History of Southwest Virginia and
Washington County" by Lewis Preston Summers, originally published in 1903.
Mary M. Mann is a descendant of William J. Widener and Margaret Jane Wilson, another family line from John Widener. (German Immigrant) The McThenia's were married into the Widener family and Alfred E. McThenia and Mary Mann have been tireless in their research of family records.
We are indebted to Mary M. (Mrs. Roy E.) Mann (formerly Mary Margaret Widener, born June 1, 1893) for the following bits of lore:
At one time, her father, William J. Widener, owned and operated a blacksmith shop in the Friendship Community of Washington Co., Va. She was said to have been born on June 1, 1893 in a little one room log cabin.
The date of her birth along with closing dates of certain among their shop accounts, would seem to indicate that William went to Friendship and set up shop after leaving Liberty Hall (Lodi) in the spring of 1892. Many say that later they lived in Paw-Paw Hollow in Widener Valley, near John "Dackley" Widener's mill and still later, her father bought land and built a two story frame house on the main road (present Va. Rt. 605) where they lived until the place was sold to Henry "Bozier" Widener after which William and family moved to Surgoinsville, TN., where he had bought a farm in Gravelly Valley.
Their migration from Widener's Valley to Surgoinsville, a distance of 75 miles, required four days of travel via covered wagon. The first night of their journey was spent with Hiram Ramsey, in Abington, the second night was spent with Mrs. Bailey, and their third night was spent in Kingsport with a family named Pyle. They forded streams, creeks, rivers, etc. until at Kingsport, they crossed the Holston river on a ferry.
Mary Mann said that in preperation for their trip, her mother made a "sweetpone" with baked lots of bisquits and cookies, and a neighbor baked a cake. To the children, this was a happy occasion, a four day picnic. Mary remembered many of the little incidents along the way and it is regrettable that more details of what must have beena most interesting journey, made in true pioneer fashion, is not available. This journey was made in March of 1903, and was reported by Alfred E. McThenia, Montevista Drive, Glade Springs, VA on November 12, 1975.....
