Seeking information regarding William Welham who was born C1826 possibly in Essex, England.
He was the son of Samuel Welham and was convicted of Larceny at Chelmsford, Essex in 1853 and transported to Western Australia to serve a 15 year term.
His records from Parramatta Prison state that he was widdowed, a Protestant, and that his occupation was that of 'diver' (not sure if this is a transcription error). He was granted his ticket-of-leave in 1856, and a conditional pardon in 1860.
He also married in 1860, to Catherine Moore, daughter of Thomas Moore of Dublin, Ireland. His and his father's occupations are given as shoemaker on his marriage certificate.
In 1861 Willaim and Catherine had a daughter they named Anna Maria (Annie). When she married Michael Hickey in Victoria in 1883, she gave her father's details as William Whelan, master mariner.
At this time, however, her mother, Catherine, was married to Henry Cabe.We have been unable to find out what happened to William. We believe that the family had moved to Adelaide at some stage, and Annie said that she was born there.Catherine's death certificate gives her place of marriage as Adelaide, but makes no mention of William.
I would love to hear from anyone who could throw some light on our mystery, or give some details on William's origins.
