Hi Cousin, I think I have what you're looking for if you don't already have it. "The Wellwood family history began in Raleigh Township, County of Kent, Ontario, Canada with the arrival in 1831 from County Carlow, Ireland of Robert Wellwood with his family of ten children, 5 sons & 5 daughters (no name for a wife and we don't know if she was with them or deceased). Their first place of location was Kettle Creek, near Wallacetown and they remained about a year after which they came to Raleigh Township. The time that this family settled in the township pre-dated roads or any improvemens and there were no near neighbors. They cleared an area first for a log house, later replaced by another larger house, and much later by a large brick residence. Of Robert's ten children, the eldest, Samuel, was the one who remained on the original site. While residing in Ireland, Samuel married Hannah Griffin who emigrated with him. They raised a family of eight. Samuel Sr. and Hannah continued to clear the property, but had cleared only one quarter of the farm when Samuel died at the age of 56 years in 1855. Hannah & children stayed on the property and continued to clear and improve it. Nine years later Hannah married Silas Eaton. Records indicate that she kept control of the Wellwood property. Hannah died in 1890 at age 86 years and is buried in St. Partick's Cemetety beside her first husband, Samuel Wellwood." from the Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Kent, Ontario, Canada containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens and many of the early settled families, J.H. Beers and Co., Toronto, 1903. With index compiled by Helen Blackburn. It contains a lot of data on both Robert1 children and Samuel & Hanna's children. If you would like more, let me know and I'll send it along.
My ancestor was Robert Wellwood's son, Robert Wellwood, brother of Samuel. My line is Robert1 Wellwood, Robert2 m. Catherine Declute on Feb. 5, 1839, Ephraim3, Royal4, Lyle5. Robert1 later move on to Detroit, Michigan, USA, with Robert2, where he died. Ephraim3 fought in the Civil War and I have his Military Data if anyone wants it.

It looks like we are cousins way, way back. If you have any info on Robert1 or Robert2or the mother of this large brood I would really appreciate it. My birth dates are very questionable. Hope this is helpful to you. Paula (maiden name Wellwood) comments powered by Disqus
