78, Hopewell, pased away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 14, 2000, in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QE II after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born October 23, 1921 in Halifax, he was a son of the late Daniel "Bob" and Rita (Hartlen) Wessell. He retired from the Dept of Social Services, Digby in 1985. Prior to that he worked for the CNR for 25 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Springhill and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hopewell. He served in the Canadian Army overseas in the Second World War. Vernon was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife Nora (Barkhouse), Hopewell; son, Danny, Westville; daughter, Heather and son-in-law, Wayne Gladwin, Dartmouth; granddaughter, Angela Gladwin, Dartmouth; sisters, Bee Mason, Halifax; Joyce Lushington, Calgary, Alta; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his infant grandson, Andrew Gladwin. Cremation has taken place. Interment and graveside service for family and friends will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lower Sackville at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, October 17, Archdeacon Rod Gillis officiating. Reception to follow at 3 PM, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St. Dartmouth. Memorial service to be held 2:30 PM, October 21 in H.W. Angus Funeral Home, East River Road, New Glasgow, Rev. Charles MacPherson officiating. Reception to follow service. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Veterans Memorial Building, QE II, the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
