My gr-gr-gr-grandmother was Ann Eliza Jane Westfall, born 16 September 1838 in Arcadia (outside Palmyra), Wayne County, New York and passed away 22 March 1878 in Marion, Wayne County, New York.
She married John Rogers, who we think was born 18 February 1836 in Union Springs, Cayuga County, New York and passed away 29 May 1901 in Newark, Wayne County, New York.
Together, they had at least one child, Ann Adele Rogers (1868-1936), who married Franklin Jessup Reeves, Jr. of the Palmyra Reeves.
Ann Eliza Jane Westfall's parents were Samuel Westfall and Catherine Romans. This has been passed down, documented, and confirmed about six ways to sunday. In fact, I recently discovered the obituary of Ann's brother John Romans Westfall (1835-1898), which clearly states his parents as "Samuel and Katherine (Romans) Westfall." This is given further credence, as John's son Samuel successfully petitioned the Sons of the American Revolution for membership on the basis of his grandfather Samuel's marriage to Catherine Romans. (Catherine Romans is descended from the noted Romans and van Hovenburg lines of American Revolutionary service.) If the S.A.R. bought it, it's pretty sure to be correct!
However, everywhere one looks on the internet these days, we see Samuel Westfall (1802-1871) and Senah Cortright (1801-1887) - who are from Phelps in Ontario County (the birthplace of John Romans Westfall described above!) as being the parents of John Romans Westfall.
Well it can't be both, and I tend to believe the Sons of the American Revolution over Rootsweb, which (shall we say) has occasion to be a little inaccurate in places... ;)
So what I'm looking for is evidence that'll give a concrete idea as to who the heck MY Samuel Westfall is. Is it a different guy born at about the same time in almost the very same place, or did Samuel Westfall marry both Senah Cortright AND Catherine Romans, and people have just screwed up which kid belongs to which pairing?
Catherine Romans's family is easy to track because of their deep Revolutionary roots. But Samuel Westfall, her husband, is very difficult to track down.
I'd appreciate the insight of anyone with experience with the Westfalls of Ontario and/or Wayne Counties. You can reach me at email@example.com. Thank you very much for any assistance!
