My theory- John Westfield of Overton Lancs circa 1418 occupation in 1440 was the Greave of Overton. He & wife Alice Groby had a daughter Elizabeth Westfield born circa 1444. This could be the Elizabeth married to Robert Washington in 1464. Snips from British History on Line. Please check out full version. Following 3 definitions obtained other sources: Meaning of "Greave". 1."The serfs in the English manors usually elected one of their number annually to oversee their work for the lord,2. "This occupational name is from the Old Norse word greifi which originally meant 'steward' or 'person in charge of property'. This word became greyve in Middle England and it formed the names Grieve(s) and Reeve(s). The Old Danish and Old Swedish meaning of the word geigi was 'earl, count'. In a sense these titles were also occupational, as the bearers were vassals of the king." 3.He was the town official -literally a baliff.(from the word retrieve)Reave – Act of taking seize or snatch. Perhaps others can comment on John the greave and Wife Alice as possibly being the in-laws of Robert Washingtonmarried to their daughter Elizabeth Westfield in 1464. Mary.
