Dear Deana,
Thanks for your response.Regarding Vine Allen, he is listed as the third child of Southey and Mary (we believe Mary [Polly] Prescott, is likely the wife of Southey's second marriage)in the 1850 census. The census taker got ahead of himself & wrote the name in a way that it is a bit difficult to recognize, but Victor at the CravenCty. public library, responded to us as follows:
"Dear Glen and Karen,
The name as spelled on the microfilmed copy of the census is
"Weathrington". The complete household as enumerated is:
Southy Weathrington, w, m, 72
Mary, w, f, 50
S--- [looks like Shem or Shern...it begins with an S, though
the rest of the letters do not make much sense], w, m, 22
Ellen, w, f, 19
Vine Allen, w, m, 6
Clarissa, w, f, 14
The name Vine can be made out with some work. As I mentioned
in my earlier e-mail, the census taker started to write
"Ville", then wrote over the "ll" with "n". I am including a
file called "weathrington1.pdf" which includes a copy of the
page from the 1850 census. It is a little streaked, but you
should be able to read the names (especially if you zoom in
to 400%). The "n" over the "ll" is a little easier to read
on the microfilm reader than it is on the printout. In the
printout, the second stroke of the "n" and the second letter
"l" look like a "d".
If I can help further, please let me know.
Best wishes,
Victor

My grandfather was Clarence Wetherington, son of Samuel Jackson Wetherington, son of Henry William Wetherington, son of Stephen Alexander Wetherington, son of Southey Wetherington & his first wife, Polly Anderson. There is a possibility that this Polly Anderson was also a nickname for Mary and could be the same Mary as in the 1850 census, but the dates don't really seem to make that possible & we have been told that Southey sr. married 2 or more times & the 2nd was a Polly Prescott (mar. 1827).The children's ages seem to also indicate (in the 1850 census) that this was a 2nd family.Southey sr. (above) was the son of Stephen.Stephen & Southey were both from Craven/Dobbs/Lenoir Cty. N.C. & died in N.C.We are currently trying to verify additional lineage, but haven't yet.
I was born in Southern Illinois.
If you would like additional info on children of the above, we may be able to help some.
