Hello Mike,
Just trying to help. No relation.
I did some checking on your Whalley and McGrail.
However, after trying to find a marriage ref for the above couple I found no matches under McGrail.
You may be surprised to learn that Mary's name was not McGrail but McGRANE.
A James Henry WHALLEY married a Mary Ann McGrane in 1909. Marriage reg'd in the district of Warrington.
Ref's to births that I found with the mothers maiden name McGrane=
Samuel Whalley. b.1912.
William ''b.1915.
James''b.1916.
Henry''b.1919.
Mary''b.1921.
I found a Helen Whalley birth ref reg'd in Prescot,in 1911.
Mothers maiden names were only given from mid 1911 onwards on the indexes. The Helen I found was reg'd in the June Qtr of 1911. The June qtr cover the months Ap/May/June for all births reg'd in that qtr.
Reg'd in Prescot, Lancashire.
I'm sure there were other children. However, the name Whalley was a very common name and several Norman and Jean's and Margaret's were born in Lancashire.

A WHALLEY did marry a McGRAILbut that was a Harry Whalley and Frances McGrail who married in 1921 in the Leigh disc't of Manchester.
Children I found born to this couple and whose mothers maiden name was McGrail were=
Nora I. Whalley.b1921.Leigh.
Florence. ''1923.
James.''1924.
Jean''1925.
Lois.''1929.
Joan.''1930.

I can send you the 1909 marriage ref details if you wish+ the PRO office address and email address if you would like to order a copy of the marriage cert.
If I had James Whalley's fathers name I might be able to find the family on the 1901 census and further back.
Marriage cert would give fathers names for both couple + occupations and addresses.
Patrick.
